Buy Direct Points Received

I emailed my guide and asked why I would not be able to get October 2019 Use Year points if I bought in March vs now assuming they have the inventory then. This was his response:

"You might be able to get them. Again, can't stress enough, it is just a matter of what we have at the time you buy and what the price is at the time and when you want to use the points"

So I have concluded it was a tactic to try to get me to buy right now vs. a couple of months from now.

More an "encouragement" tactic. ;) Hate to give prospective buyers a chance to research resale or even think further about their purchase.

And even if they didn't have the points to sell you immediately when you called in March it probably wouldn't take too long before they did for OKW.

One thing - you outlined a scenario in the first post of borrowing 2020 points to book the March 2021 reservation but you would not be doing that. March 2021 falls with in the October 2020 UY and those would be current points. You also could use banked 2019 points or borrowed 2021 points for the March 2021 dates. What points that are available to be used is determined by the date of the reservation and not the date you actually call or go online to book the reservation.

IMO, it was the guide was just being honest. DVD cannot sell you an October use year with 2019 points if they do not have October use year points in their inventory. The closer it gets to October 2020, the less likely there will be October 2019 points available. Why? Because those 2019 points will expire on 9/30/2020. Disney will use them to rent villas to the general public - the cash received for those rental goes to Disney's bottom line. They will not "hold" points in inventory hoping that someone will come along to buy them late in the use year. That would be taking unnecessary risk. They will get whatever cash they can for them by renting out the equivalent nights for cash. It's like an empty hotel room. Will the hotel keep an empty room in case a last minute guest shows up and risk not getting the revenue? Or will they rent it out and get the $$. "A bird in hand is worth ............"

They may very well have October 2019 points in inventory when you are ready to buy in a couple of months. My advice is "Don't buy until you are ready". DVC is a long term contract and IMO, you shouldn't let one year's worth of points or one trip dictate your decision. Good luck.
