Okay...since my son's class now is "doing butterflies" he's all into them. I have the Sea & See excursion booked with DCL, but I'm probably going to cancel it and just do the Butterfly Farm on our own.

Here's my question. We'll take a cab to the farm, do that tour, but then what? Is there anything else near the farm that we can walk to (like shopping?!!) Should we just take a cab back to the dock, have lunch on the ship and then head out for shopping or the beach afterwards? Any suggestions?

I don't think there was anything within walking distance of the farm.
I remember passing some stables- but I think they were too far to walk. You could get the cab to take you to Phillipsburg or Marigot for shopping.
We went to a pastry shop in marigot -it was very French.

Don't plan on spending hours at the Butterfly farm- it is not that large.
:D

I am almost positive that Orient Bay is very very close to the Butterfly Farm.

BTW -- DH and I really enjoyed the Butterfly Farm in St. Maarten! I'm sure you'll son will have a great time! We did the excursion to the Butterfly Farm through Disney. We had enough time after that to take a cab from port to Orient Bay for a few hours.

We also enjoyed the DCL excursion to Butterfly Farm, but wished that we had had more time there--so doing it on your own is a good idea. We went to an open air market in Marigot which had good buys. You could also take a taxi back to the dock and take the water taxi into Phillipsburg.

Thanks everyone!!!

I personally thought the butterfly farm was big waste of time and money. If I were to do it again I wouldn't go. We took a taxi to the farm, it cost $24 ($6 per person) and $40 to get in and believe me I have seen WAY better butterflies at our own local zoo. Then $24 to get back to the dock! I did not think it was worth the $88 we spent!!!
I don't mean to make it such a downer but really I would find something else to do! On our entire 7 day eastern cruise that trip to the butterfly farm was by far the worst mistake we made!:o

I agree $48 on the cab fare is high...that's why I'm wondering about the price of hiring a private taxi for the day.

Anyone know what that would cost??

We went to the Butterfly Farm on the 4/17 Eastern and loved it. It's near Orient Beach and not much else. The ride from the ship to the farm goes across St. Maarten through poor residential areas. We had the people at the farm call us a cab and went back to the ship. It was REALLY hot that day and we couldn't wait to get back to the nice cool pool and air conditioned ship! Cab fare was $6 per person and we shared the van with some other folks.
