My question is about the Business Casual dress rule for some of the table service restaurants. What is a Flip-flop really? :confused3

My DD's have sundresses to wear to the Business Casual meals but I'm not sure what is a REAL Flip-flop is? Does that include the Crocs & Teva in the Flip-flop Style? DD9 has white patten leather sandals in the Flip-flop style that are beautiful. Most of the sandals this season are the Flip-flop style.

If they are in dresses will I be okay with what I mentioned above. I will be dressed in sandals & DH will have Docsiders & a golf shirt.

Your girls will be perfectly fine in those. You will be such a nice looking family.

Use your discretion. If it looks junky like a flip flop, then I wouldn't wear it. If it looks decent like a regular sandal even it if it is in the toe prong style with no backstrap, then it's OK. They won't say a word about girls in dresses and decent looking sandals.

I think the dress code applies more to the adults than the children. As long as children are wearing (crisp) clean clothes and shoes (no stains, tears or holes), that's about all, I see, they can ask for. Obviously, I wouldn't take my DD in her stained school clothes and her beat-up sneakers to V&A. You'll be fine! Go. Enjoy! :thumbsup2

I questioned the women in our extended family and they all agreed that they consider this a flip flop

And this is a sandal

For kids, I agree if they are clean and neat I doubt they will say anything. I just know from talking to some of the staff, they had adults showing up in Swim wear, with rubber flip flops, mens in tank tops, cut offs, etc. and felt they had to draw the line somewhere.

Um... both the links took me to the same green flip-flop. I... I'm confused.

As for the question.. I think the girls will be just fine.

Thanks I fixed it, the women in the family said the first is a rubber flip flop, the second is a thong sandal, and that is how Old Navy describes them too.

From www.allearsnet.com:

Last week, we noted that California Grill had changed its dress
code to "business casual." This policy is also now in effect for
many upscale WDW restaurants.

No hats, swimsuits, swimsuit coveralls, tank tops, T-shirts, torn clothing or flip-flops are permitted at the following: Artist Point (Wilderness Lodge),
California Grill (Contemporary), Citricos and Narcoossee's
(Grand Floridian), Jiko (Animal Kingdom Lodge), Flying Fish
(Boardwalk), and Yachtsman Steakhouse (Yacht Club).

Business casual attire includes dress shorts, pants, jean pants, collared
shirts, blouses and sweaters.

I agree with this assessment. Lots of sandals have the "thong" style toe, but I don't think that it is really the same as a "flip flop". I really can't imagine anyone complaining about a child (or adult) in a dress and nice sandals of that style. Honestly, I have even seen nice mens thong shoes that I think would also be fine. I am sure your girls will be perfect. JJ

MAKmom,

I think what your family plans to wear sounds fine. When we ate at Bistro de Paris and Flying Fish this weekend, I wore a skirt and leather flip flops and felt comfortable. I think the flip flops will be fine for your daughters if they're in dresses. People wear everything in the restaurants even with the dress code. Hope this helps.

A thong sandal is not the same thing as a flip flop. Just don't show up in the sort of thing you would wear to the pool.

Thank you everyone for the great replies. I'm relieved I have the flip flop/thong issue under control. When I booked the Flying Fish the CM said no flip flops. Girls are so hard. You want to look nice but if you go to a park directly after dinner you need touring shoes on. I have my "dressy" Black Clarks. lol :cool1:

Just for the record-- the "business casual" dress code as printed in the WDW Handy Guide to all the Magic (found in your WDW resort hotel room) makes no mention whatsoever of footwear.

I think you even have to take this with a "grain of salt".
I mean, I have "tank tops" that are part of very formal outfits. No, they aren't the ones in "t-shirt material", but in silk. Still, it looks like a tank top. What, they are going to not let me in because I wear a formal outfit that has a tank top style top? I don't think so!

No hats? Yes, that same outfit has a matching hat. Think Ascot-style hats. Jee, all the (European) royals wear hats all the time!

I guess they mean baseball hats, but they should be more specific. And have an * with some extra information. Like "exceptions can be granted". yes, some people still like to visit Mickey after chemo, but don't like to show their bald head. And thus, wear hats.

Sorry, just needed to say that

PS: for the record: I don't have a V&A adr, so I don't have to argue over my tank top style top

Personally, I think a thong sandal and a flip flop are exactly the same thing. But as Sandra says above, I have some lovely silk tank tops I'd wear in a second to California Grill. Use your best judgement. If you are concerned about it, you are probably fine.

Also sometimes t-shirts can be dressy. I think it's a case of the "spirit of the law" thing. If you look dressed up you are going to be and feel fine.

If the room guide does not mention footwear I am really ok. DD11 has a beautiful long Sundress to wear but she wants to wear it with Croc white/blue thongs or yellow beach style Crocs. Footwear with her is an issue this year. I refuse sneaker this year they get wet in the parks with the daily rainstorms & do not dry.

FYI on Hats. The royals only wear hats to daytime affairs. Never in the evening. All the Business casual restaurants are not open for lunch.

I am bumping this up... Polos on women/girls are ok right? I was thinking lime or pale pink polos with white capris would be fun and business casual.

1) For Artist Point, I have heard most of the excuses
. . . it is a neat tee shirt, even without a collar
. . . the jeans short are not all that faded
. . . but the flip flops have sequens and should be OK
. . . the shorts aren't THAT short
. . . but flips are the only things the kids wear
2) All of the above excuses did not get them into Artist Point
3) Better restaurants are just that - BETTER RESTAURANTS
4) Be respectful of others who want a nice dining exsperience for the price
. . . don't wear flips, even for kids
. . . wear neat shorts or dockers
. . . wear a collared shirt
