I can't think of how this applies to Bush1 not invading Iraq, so maybe there's a suggestion here of oil. And if you're not suggesting that, many others have, so it's an example. My answer is that I don't approve of knocking over a country for its oil business, but I did approve of the side benefit of knocking Hussein himself out of the oil business. There is a difference, and it would necessarily be a by-product of those other reasons. Had GWB proposed the same plan for Venezuela or somewhere we weren't already actively trying to contain, then everyone would have been at the same level of disbelief and having to be "won over" with every possible reason explored. That just wasn't going to happen with Iraq - too much bad history there already, including illicit oil dealing and coveting his neighbors' supplies - so I personally never considered it an ulterior motive on the US side.

I guess the short answer is that the suggested US ulterior motives never surmounted the benefits of removing Hussein, to me.

The Iraqis just voted on a constitution a couple days ago, transparent. One, mind you, that they were already talking about ammending while the ink dried on their signatures.

You do realize that our Constitution suffered the same fate - the first 10 amendments were added in because Virginia (and others) were threatening to defeat it's passage.

Have you even for one moment thought that many of Saddam's people just "shut up" when the knew in their hearts the government was going in the wrong direction? They shut up and look what happened. Shame on you for insinuating free speech is disrespectful to our soldiers.

Have you thought that learning from errors is a good thing? I happen to think this war was one big error. If I accept the premise that it was a just war - right time right place ===I still think major errors occured. Many innnocent lives were lost (US and Iraqi) because of lack of an exit strategy and lack of a bigger first push. I am saying it is WRONG because I hope that the next time we NEED to go to war we will save countless lives by remembering our errors.

Bush approval hits 39%, lowest of his presidency

WASHINGTON — President Bush's job approval rating has slipped to 39%, the lowest measure of his presidency, according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll.
At the same time, job approval for Congress, which has a Republican majority, has fallen to 29%. That is its lowest level since 1994, the year Democrats lost control of the Senate and House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years.

The poll showed that 68% of Americans say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the country. That is the most negative assessment in nearly a decade.

And you will find that El Salvador retains the political/military culture you covet, as does NK and many other polities where they realize the inner strength that comes from unquestioned support for the leaders' military ventures. You might feel more comfortable there - no brooking public disagreement with the mission
