To the OP that said used JFK and liberalism in the same sentence, well, I gotta tell ya, JFK would not be recognized by anyone in the Democratic party today. The Democratic party was destroyed by folks like McGovern and his ilk. The Democratic Party of today is nothing like the Democratic Party of JFK. Douglas Dubh is right; look at the data.

As for "that's not what the polls say", well, if Kerry is the BEST the Dems have to offer for the future, then their party is truly on the decline. Despite the bad news that Bush has had to deal with, Kerry still can't make any headway. A strong viable candidate would have made HUGE gains by now. What does that say about Kerry as a candidate?

doubletrouble_vb, Thanks for that link. I knew it was bad, but had no idea just how bad. I am stunned to say the least. The numbers are shocking. Particularly :

"Three-quarters of the ads aired by Bush's campaign have been attacks on Kerry. Bush so far has aired 49,050 negative ads in the top 100 markets, or 75 percent of his advertising. Kerry has run 13,336 negative ads -- or 27 percent of his total. The figures were compiled by The Washington Post using data from the Campaign Media Analysis Group of the top 100 U.S. markets. Both campaigns said the figures are accurate."

Amost 50 thousand negtive ads, as confirmed by his own campaign! And many of them false, as the article goes on to say. Of particular interest was where the Bush campaign ads attributed quotes to Kerry, which were in fact quotes from opinion columns. One can only hope that people will see through all the negative ads and it backfires to the extent that future candidates will avoid them.

This article barely touches on one very important reason for the Bush team to run negative ads (and why it is such a good strategy for Bush to employ). Namely that it will depress voter turnout.

A constant stream of negative advertising puts Kerry in a tough position. On the one hand Kerry needs to prevent Bush from defining him to the American people. And if Kerry doesn’t reply with some negative ads of his own, he comes off looking soft - as if he isn’t up for the fight. (This in part is what happened to Dukakis in 88)

But if Kerry gets involved with a tit for tat with Bush through negative advertising, he starts risking a good voter turnout. Nothing drives down voter turnout like an overtly negative campaign. And this is exactly what Bush would love to see – a low turnout. Invariably, low voter turnouts are good for Republicans. (Conversely, Democrates ussually do well with higher turnouts) So if Kerry starts to mix it up too much with Bush, he may end up giving Rove exactly the scenario the the Bush team needs to guarantee another 4 years and the Whitehouse.

And General Eisenhower or Jacob Javits or Kenneth Keating would be recognized by anyone in the Republican Party. Hell, Barry Goldwater, with his pro-choice/anti religious right stance, wouldn't be recognized by anyone in the Republican party.

Both of you are in for a shock on election day. Bush will be lucky to get the percentage his old man got in 1992. I don't believe this election is going to be close at all. As a matter of fact, the 2004 election is starting to look like the 1980 election. When it was time to stand up and vote, people deserted Carter because of the sense the country was headed in the wrong direction.

This is what too many don't get. This election isn't about Kerry. This election is about George Bush. People are emotionally deserting Bush in droves. Once that connection starts to break, people don't look back. I can't tell you how many Republican I've heard use the words "I can't vote for Bush." Well, they're either going to vote for Kerry or they'll stay home and Democrats can't wait to get to the polls. None of this bodes well for Bush.

Like I said, come election day, you and DD are in for a shock.
