I would cetainly hope that the President wouldn't be holding back important info from the American public in order to bring it out closer to the midterm elections! Talk politicizing the war effort beyond anything this country has ever seen. I think that if he is playing that game, the President would instantly lose more crediblity, even within his hardline right base.

No...I honestly think that he isn't talking about the info quoted by Joe because the White House simply does not find it credible. Political op-ed columnists (from the right and left) can talk about pretty much any kind of info that they come across, but our elected officials are thankfully held to a much higher standard. I think they learned their lesson after the whole "Niger/Iraq/enriched uranium/WMD" State of the Union fiasco.

Unfortunately, the timeline for this one looks less like WWII and more like the USSR's ill fated Afganistan War of 1978–92, where over 1 million Afgans and 15,000 Soviets perished in the long drawn out conflict, before the Soviet Union, with it's far superior weapons and complete air control, lost it's stomach for the whole ordeal. Luckily, in America, we are free to raise our voices in discontent and hopefully end this one much, much sooner.

I think we'll have to see what they say their reasoning for it is.

ETA: I also think that if the ceasefire does indeed hold, that Spain has proven that with the coordination of international police agencies, working with countries like France, Holland, Venezuela and Mexico, and the freezing of certain ETA assets, that war is not the be all end all answer in dealing with terrorist organizations. It can be done peacefully.
