BUSH ACCUSES SADDAM OF REFUSING TO DEFY U.N.

Gives Iraqi Leader ‘One Last Chance’ to Thumb Nose at World Body

In a sign that he is losing patience with the Iraqi leader, President George W. Bush today sharply criticized Saddam Hussein’s decision to accept the United Nations’ resolution on weapons inspections, accusing Saddam of flagrantly refusing to defy the world body.

In a speech from the Rose Garden, Mr. Bush said that he had been waiting patiently for Saddam to scorn the latest U.N. resolution, but that his patience was now wearing thin.

“I’m a patient man, but eventually my patience will run out,” Mr. Bush warned the Iraqi strongman. “To Saddam Hussein, I say this: defy the U.N. immediately, or face the consequences.”

While Mr. Bush offered no deadline by which Saddam must scorn the U.N. resolutions, his tone suggested that he is offering the Iraqi leader one last chance to make a mockery of the world body – or else.

“If you wish to join the community of nations, then you must learn to ignore U.N. resolutions the way the rest of us do,” Mr. Bush warned Saddam. “As long as you persist in accepting U.N. resolutions, you will remain a rogue state in the eyes of the world.”

While Britain’s Tony Blair was quick to support the President’s tough new stance, Mr. Bush’s insistence that Iraq defy the U.N. resolution drew a sharp rebuke from Iraqi’s U.N. ambassador, Mohammed Al-Douri.

“Iraq is not taking dictation from the U.S. President,” Mr. Al-Douri said. “We will defy the U.N. when we’re good and ready, and not a moment sooner.”
