Busch Gardens Tampa tips

A few personal tips for the general good of the order:

If you want to stay in Tampa and you're a shopper I highly recommend the Renaissance hotel which is on the grounds of the International Mall. Basically you have lodging, shopping and a bit of clubby nightlife atmosphere right there in one place.

If you want to stay in Tampa and are a partier check out Ybor City.

For a nice upscale hotel I like the Marriott Waterside on the river and near the Convention Center.

As for Busch Gardens, my favorite coaster is actuallly one of the older ones, Kumba, which has a two-loop feature; it's loud and fast- it's also in the very back of the park, so one strategy is to get into the park and walk back there (or take the skyway or train) and ride this first - then work your way back.

Sheikra is the most visually impressive and imposing but it's such a smooth ride that it's really not as scary as you'd think once you get past that deliciously disorienting part where you're dangling over that 90 degree drop. By all means wait so you can sit in the front row so there's nothing between your legs dangling in front of you and the ground far below. Fantastic experience.

Cheetah Hunt is a fun coaster, not really "thrilling" but it is a modern coaster that is not dependent upon gravity - there are pneumatic impulses throughout the ride that get the cars going, so it's kind of disorienting to be shot straight out and up rather than clicky clacking up as usually and then being dropped from the top. That makes it different - and it's also the longest coaster in Florida - which makes it arguably worth the long wait times.

For BG in the summer I highly recommend going in a swimsuit and bringing a backpack or carrier with towels and a change of clothes. Get a locker across from the Tidal Wave ride and then do all the water rides at the same time, then when you get done you can towel off and get into dry clothes - otherwise prepare for some chafing in your future. :)

Speaking of the Tangyanika Tidal Wave ride, it's really not much - a relatively mild little boat ride with a big wet drop at the end, but it's worth it to stand on the bridge exiting the ride and getting splashed by the boats as they hit the bottom. Lots of fun but hold on to little kids - it's a literal wall of water. :)

Best food is the smokehouse under Sheikra. The Crown Colony restaurant has a great view with outdoor seating overlooking the Serenghetti Plain, but I find the food to be bland there, and the bathroom in that place is astonishingly small and cramped - if you have kids to worry about.

If you're going to be there all day and like to eat the Dining plan is a bargain, especially to be able to get waters any time you want them on what are always hot days in the summer.

If your kids are into slimy critters don't forget to wander through the caves near Jambo Junction where they have all the snakes/spiders/bats etc. Also there is an aviary in Lory Landing where you can buy little cups of liquid bird food and get some great pics of exotic birds perched on your arm, or head, or whatever as they eat. You will get bird poop on you ,that's almost a given, but worth the photo op for your kids, lol.

Just random thoughts.. my kids love BG (we live an hour away) and we visit all the time.....

I do have to add one other thing. The hospitality house, where you could get two 8 ounce samples of Budweiser products for free, was abolished when Anheuser Busch was bought out by the Belgian beer conglomerat Inbev. It used to be a fun little respite during the day, where you could walk into the hospitality house with your family and eat a light lunch while the adults had a nice cold beer, feeling like you were getting away with something beause the beers were free. What did that cost the company? Maybe a few cents in barley and hops? But nooooooo the miserable penny-pinching miserly ingrates closed it down. It now sits there, alone and empty save for a few worthless art exhibitions from talentless local artists from time to time, and as the public walks by, adult males of all ages suppress hot tears lamenting days of yore gone by, and plotting the invasion of Belgium.

But I'm not bitter or anything. ;)

Minnies Boy Toy, I have a question. We are going next week, and we don't do coasters. We will have 2 days at BG (driving from Orlando, also doing 2 days at SW)

Anyway, my plan was to arrive at opening which is 930a and head straight for Congo River Rapids, then do the other 2 water rides. I read that some rides don't open at park opening. Any idea of which ride won't be open.

I hate to rush back there, to find them not open yet. We have never been to BG, so I feel a little lost, and have no real plan. Also, if the park closes at 6p, what time will the restaurants close? We have the all day dining for one day, so I would like to do lunch and dinner that day. TIA!

Don't buy a 2 day pass... Right now a one day ticket and a 2013 annual pass is the same price at the gate.

I was hoping to get some updated Busch Gardens info! :wave2:

Going in late September 2014, planning 2 park days.

Cast of characters: grandparents, 9 yr. old. grand daughter, aunt. So, 3 adults, one kid. I'm the aunt and would rather not get kicked:rotfl2:by a 9 yr. old all night, so my own bed would be preferable.

I'm hoping someone can recommend a nice hotel, I'd prefer as close as possible to BG. We don't plan on any beach trips or night-life. A suite or mini-suite situation would be nice. Am I correct that BG has no on-property hotels of their own?

We're considering the meal plan, in spite of some less than great reviews. For the price, it sounds fine, even if some restaurants or menu items are excluded.

Any current suggestions or info would be much appreciated. :thanks:

Busch Gardens is our favorite park for coasters and we always go twice in a trip. Last time I was there was June 2012 and Cheetah Hunt was brand new. We went first thing, when the park opened. The loading process was so abysmally slow I think we could have gone on Montu 3 times by the time we got on Cheetah Hunt, even though the line wasn't even that long. I would not waste more than one go on Cheetah Hunt, its fun but not THAT fun and definitely not better than SheiKra or Montu. So even though it was our first time on Cheetah Hunt we really felt like it wasted a lot of our "get there when the park opens" jump on lines.

We tried the all-day eating thing once and it is way too expensive, you will never eat enough to make it worth it. Most certainly you couldn't eat that much and go on the coasters!

If you love coasters and the biggest ones have huge lines Kumba will have shorter or no lines. It is really fun but at the back of the park and rougher than the other coasters except Gwazi of course.

If the whole park opens at once I would go on Cheetah Hunt once right at park opening and then not waste any more time on it, but that's just me. I could go on SheiKra all day. Last time we went though half the park opened an hour after official opening so SheiKra wasn't even running until 10:00.

I did notice, with where Cheetah Hunt is situated, that people tend to move on to Montu since its closest to Cheetah Hunt. So that means SheiKra is wide open for a while in the morning while people do CH/Montu, assuming they actually opened everything at once.

But that's just me and my coaster loving son, I am sure sure some people go for the animals and can give advice on that.

I like Cheetah Hunt better than Shiekra because it seems to last longer and it has more twists and turns. Shiekra is only exciting if you get the front row.

There are no on property hotels. Busch Gardens is in a business district of Tampa near University of South Florida. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is not far from Busch Gardens. Other than that there are a couple hotels just a block from Busch Gardens. Go towards Fowler (USF), not Busch Blvd (rough area) if you want to stay close to BG.

Here are some choices:
Embassy Suites (Fowler Ave)
Wingate by Wyndham (Fowler Ave)
La Quinta Inn and Suites (Fowler Ave)
Baymont Inn and Suites (Fower Ave)

Again, all of Busch Blvd is a bad area. I have a friend who lives off Busch on 21st St just a few blocks away (in her childhood home with her parents) and it's pretty sketchy.

My family of 5 stayed at the Hampton Inn North Tampa 2 nights ago. We had a 1 bedroom suite, with 2 double beds in a separate room from a large living room with a pull out sofa. We also had a pack and play set up. It was in a nice area, actually a business park. It had nice landscaping and was very quiet. The shuttle was great... They dropped us off and picked us up at the gate (less than 10 minute drive). We were the only passengers. We got a good rate by booking through Busch Gardens website. It included a free all day dining pass for each guest.

Could someone tell me the closest beach to BG? We are staying on site at Disney and are going to BG for the day. We'd like to get a bit of time in at the beach late afternoon before driving back. Is this doable? We have all teenagers. Thanks!

We are in the Tampa area and I highly recomend not staying near Busch Gardens. 4kidsfor4karen had great info.

There's some good hotels close to BGT,but they're limited.Near the parks on Fowler ave across from USF you have an Embassy Suites,a Wingate and a La Quinta.A little further away an area that has a couple decent hotels is Fletcher ave by I-75.There's nothing that I would suggest on Busch Blvd.Aside from these areas I'm sure there's some good places by the airport by the International Plaza and Bay Street mall and the Hard Rock casino is nice but its also in a not so good area.BGT is not Orlando which has hundreds of hotel options,in Tampa you have to be more selective when choosing a hotel, make sure its a good brand and that its in a good location.BGT is a great park but its located in the middle of a city surrounded by decent to some not so great areas. Many times if I'm staying in Orlando and doing a day at BGT I'll drive over or even take the free shuttle that leaves from Orlando.

To SabbyR,

There are beaches but not very near BG.

BUT

Will you wish to leave BG early.

You are on vacation & have spent a lot of money for B.Gardens why rush away?

You have at least 1 1/2 hour drive to get to B.G. & they only start at 10am

And by the time you have really enjoyed All the Coasters & Falcons fury
And the 360degree Pirate ship & all the shows & the Ariel cable Car ride &

Safari park you will be still there till closing at 6pm

Then you will need something to eat & another 1 1/2 hour Drive home.

A good long day of fun so why rush off to a beach that takes an hour to reach & another hour back for an hours swim ?
