Bus Service Needs a Spruce Up & What Happened to the Fun Drivers?

For me when it comes to the Bus Drivers....see my post about FREDDY!!! :earseek:  That was ONE scary dude, and he almost went thru a yellow/red light, we almost went flying thru the windsheild! :sad2: I got him twice on my 5 day trip to Disney. :guilty:

I'm sorry, but I disagree, that is like saying we should only expect the cashiers in the gift shops to give us correct change, but I do expect a "thank you" or "have a nice day" -- and as I said, I DON'T expect the drivers to be entertainers or tour guides, but from past experience, I did have drivers who talked or made occasional comments and barring those little extras if they happens, even though they are not expected or required, I do expect a response when I say "hello" or "good morning" when boarding a non-moving bus. I also said it wasn't a big thing, and it really wasn't, but it was noticeable.

I think your bus driver did what he is paid to do drive you to your destination safely and give the "regular" speech....for those of you seating please remain sitting and for those of you who have the priviledge of standing please hold on to one of the rails. Please monitor your children.

He has said all he needs to say. He covered his job description and that all I expect of any bus driver. Any jokes, comments, or fun stuff is extra and you should appreciate it but not expect it. As you posted, not all drivers feel the need to entertain you...that's why they didn't.

I don't see in any Disney brochure "Our bus drivers will entertain you as they drive you to your magical Disney destination."

You not entitled to the bus driver entertaintainment....but you are entitled to "free and safe transportation" included in your park admission and resort payment price. Now I have seen that in a Disney brochure!

Some of this conversation reminds be of the towel animal posts. It seems that once people get something extra, like towel animals, then they are unhappy if they don't get them next time.

I for one think that the drivers primary job is to get people on the bus quickly, drive to the destination safely, and then get them off quickly. Anything else while nice is a bonus and not too be expected.

With regards to saying hello when getting on I think it would be nice but part of me does prefer the silent driver. The reason is that sometimes chatty passengers end up slowing down the loading / unloading time. Please no flamming. I know some people like to have the chit chat with drivers and such but at times when you are waiting to get on or off a bus and the person ahead of you is chatting up a storm it can be a bit bothersome.

Donning flame proof suit now. :)

Speaking as a former WDW bus driver, I think I'll add my two cents...

When I drove, the majority of the time I was silent. I'd welcome guests onto my bus, I'd do the standard spiel, and I'd say goodbye. (During the park exits, if I have a full bus, I add humor to my speil, but the ride itself is silent) But that was about it. Several times, I had guests come up to me and they expected me to sing, or do some routine, and were very dissapointed when I didn't. When I explained to them my reasonings (below) they agreed.

It is actually Federal Law that bus drivers are not allowed to engage in conversation with passengers (or sing, trivia, etc) while operating the vehicle. I totally agree with this law, because driving on WDW property is NOT easy. Lots of crazy unpredictable drivers out there. A driver has to be FULLY focused on the road to be prepared for whatever might be out there. Even a simple conversation is enough to distract the driver enough to cause a potential safety problem.

As unmagical as it may sound, Disney policy agrees with the law; to not engage in such conversation. We have a pre-set dafety spiel that we're to do, however, the only magical interaction that we can have is when we greet our guests. Here at Disney, Safety comes FIRST... it's much more magical to arrive at your destination safe, than to compromise safety.

In regards to bus condition... Narly half our fleet is brand new, or nearly new (116, with 25 more on order). The rest of our fleet (150, give or take) is on average 15-20 years old. Although this sounds old, for a mass transit vehicle, this is not old at all. Many mass transit vehicles can last over 30 years, thanks to good maintenance programs. Disney's RTS fleet are maintained very well, especially when you consider many of them have well over 1 million miles on them.

Every night, each bus is thouroughly cleaned inside and out. Any trash you might find on the bus is from guests on a previous ride who decided to litter. Drivers try and walk the bus every so often, but we don't always have the ability to do such, since we will load immedietly after we unload. (Guests don't like to wait)

Cosmetically, there are some buses that are better looking than others. We're constantly repainting the fleet. In recent years, many older buses have also recieved freshened interiors.

In response to the yellow/red light comment... this is a tricky thing. There are some lights on property (most specifically, the Coronado Springs and the Swan/Dolphin lights on Buena Vista Drive) that turn yellow very suddenly, and then red very quickly. When driving the speed limit (40, 45 respectively), it's extremely hard to stop a bus when that light turns yellow. We have two choices... run the yellow as it turns red, OR, slam on our brakes, send everyone flying forward, and usually end up stopped in the middle of the intersection, often times blocking traffic. This decision must be made in a split second. It's a VERY tough decision, as each situation is different. Me, I always went with the safer decision, even if it meant running the light as it went from yellow to red. (They have a delay for the opposing green)

By all means, I do not mean running a fully red light. By all means, if the light turns yellow, and I can stop, I will. 95% of the time, there will be ample time to stop. But every so often, and those two lights in particular, you have to make that judgement call.

We've always had great drivers at WDW. This past December 30th, we spent the day at Blizzard Beach and our female bus driver sang "Wheels on the Bus" and "If You're Happy and You Know It" all the way back to the hotel while beeping the bus horn in all the appropriate places! She even sang Happy Birthday for anyone who had a birthday that was anywhere close! She was a hoot (Is she a friend of yours, Tyler?) but it actually got a little old by the time we got to Pop Century but I certainly appreciated her attempts!!!

Yea Tyler, inquiring minds want to know! :confused3

Well, I can say for sure I did not get the standard spiel...HONEST, maybe that is why I thought the bus drivers were so "silent" too, not once did I hear this standard spiel...in fact I think I thought it was odd too, but forgot about it til you posted it.

And as for the "entertainment"....sigh...PLEASE JUST FORGET I SAID THAT for pete's sake. Geez, all I meant was that on past trips some of our drivers would make fun comments sometimes, I NEVER said all drivers should do this, I NEVER said I expected it, I NEVER said a driver should put our safety at risk to juggle in the aisles, I NEVER said I saw it in a brochure or thought I was entitled to entertaining bus drivers. So forget I mentioned it and let's just say that I remember having friendlier drivers in the past as opposed to this trip and forget it.

Oh I totally agree. I'd take safety over a chatty driver any day. Speaking of delays, its also like when people insist that they let their unsteady toddler or small child go up or down the bus stairs by themselves for the first time when their is a huge line up of people behind them. It takes forever and the parents think it is cute even though it slows the loading considerably. I've seen local bus drivers here tell people to pick up their kid and move when they have a long line of passengers to load. They are on strict timelines and passengers like to make their connections. At Disney most people just want to get on the bus as quickly as possible and GO. Especially if you've been waiting in the hot summer sun.

I understand what you are saying and agree WaltD4Me that a "good morning" or "hello" is just common courtesy from anyone. We had the same experiences with most of our drivers that although we would greet them coming and going (while the bus was stationary) it was rare to have them speak back to us...Not looking for a life story just a "hello".
This in no way ruined our trip but it was odd and noticeable.

Thanks for the explanation Tyler! I would prefer to get there safely myself ... and often I prefer the bus to be quiet. I remember while I was on my way back to WL from DTD, the bus stopped at FW to pick up guests who had been at Hoop Dee Doo or Mickey's BBQ. Anyway, the bus was packed to the ceiling and then some of them started to sing ... the bus driver was going really slowly to  I guess it wouldn't have been so bad if I didn't already have a headache :goodvibes

The oldest Disney buses are a million times better than the public transit we have here in Toronto. At least Disney maintains relatively clean buses and the drivers are not rude for the most part. I always notice a huge difference when I come back home and have to get on the bus or subway.

Isn't that the truth! I could stand the old buses and some of the drivers with attitude if only the buses would come on time. I somehow always manage to miss the bus matter if I'm 10 minutes early, on time or 5 minutes late. I just can't win. :rotfl: :confused3
