Burbank Studios

We re thinking of visiting Burbank studios but have no clue whether the publics actually admitted or how far from DL it is

Has any1 visited the studios?
If so was it worth seeing?
If any1s got any pics I'd love to see them

I'm assuming your talking about the Walt Disney Studios??

We just were there at the end of July. It is NOT open to the public, but we spent a bit of time taking pictures!!

It probably will take you over an hour to get there from DL.....due to traffic. We went I-5 to Hwy 101 & then went through the Hollywood area & then to Burbank.

The Disney Studios are NOT open to the public. It is sometimes open to the public when special events are set there. Last year I attended a special viewing of The Princess and the Frog that was screened at the Burbank Studios. With the viewing of the movie, we got a mini-tour of the studios which was BEYOND amazing. Its a great place to visit from the outside and take pics. The main studios are one side of the street and the animation buidling is on the other side, which I believe has been renamed the Roy E. Disney Animation Building.

There is a commissary at the main studios that was open to the public. I had heard it was open once a week to the public and you can eat lunch there and maybe see other stars eating there too. But you never knew what day it was open to the public and I don't think they do this anymore.

If you happen to be in the area on the 3rd Sunday of the month you could visit the nearby Walt's Barn, on Zoo Drive a couple of miles east of the Disney Studio.

As for studio tours, you could visit Warner Brothers or of course Universal, which are both near the Disney Studio.

From DL I'd recommend staying on the I-5 until you get to CA-134 ("Ventura Freeway"), then west for a couple of miles, getting off at Buena Vista Street. Disney Studio is right there. Google Maps says that's about 37 miles.

Did you eat at Pinks? Used to eat lunch there at 3 times a week when I work up on the strip many moons ago.

Unfortunately, no we didn't.....I was amazed at the long lines. I had read that it's always like that.....no matter the time of day!! Next trip we will for sure plan a meal there......have to see what keeps that place so popular!!

We love Pinks, and try to visit whenever we are in that part of the LA. However, the one that's outside of Knott's Berry Farm is a great alternative to those who may not want to drive all the way to LA. The menu is pretty much the same and everything we tried tasted very much like what we've had at the original. Of course, you don't have the atmosphere and history of the LA location, but you also avoid the traffic, lines, and parking hassle. We enjoy both locations.

They used to have a holiday craft faire right before Thanksgiving every year. I don't know if they still have it or not. You were allowed to wander around various parts of the studio, eat in the commissary, and shop in the studio store. They also played The Nightmare Before Christmas all day long in the theatre, which was pretty cool.

You could always try to see a TV show being taped there as well. You won't get to wander around, but it'll get you onto the lot and onto one of the soundstages. Google "LA TV/show/sitcom tapings" or something similar.

I've been fortunate enough to visit the Walt Disney Studios twice. Once on a private tour led by a Disney higher up and last December as part of The Princess and the Frog event. The first tour was about half a day long. We got to peek inside the soundstages, go through the old animation building (where most of Walt's classics were made), spend about 20 minutes on Legends Plaza, and visit the Frank G. Wells Building (where the Archives are). We even got to spend 15-20 minutes inside the Archives and finished the tour with lunch in the Commissary and 20-30 minutes inside the Walt Disney Studios Store.

By contrast, the 2nd tour took about 20-30 minutes. We did not go inside the Archives, eat at the Commissary, or visit the store. It was still amazing though.

Honestly, unless you want to visit the Warner Brothers lot (which does offer tours to the public), I don't think driving to Burbank to see the Walt Disney Studios is worth the time since you're really just seeing rather nondescript (except for the Sorcerer's Hat on the new Animation building) buildings. The real magic of the Studios is getting to walk around the campus itself and feel the history of the place where some of the greatest films ever were created and filmed.

From time to time, D23 does make tours of the Studios available, but you must be a D23 member and you must be fortunate enough to order your tickets before they're gone.

Now, if you want to soak up part of the Disney Studios experience, but can't make it to Burbank, may I suggest adding San Francisco to your itinerary and taking a day to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum.

If you are in town the 1st or 2nd weekend in December, they do give access to the World of Disney Store, the Commisary, and the Company Store at the Studios to the public. Sort of a neighborhood shopping event. You can go up to the Mickey Ave/Dopey Dr sign and eating at the commisary is pretty fun, as well. Someone usually posts up the dates on this board when they are public!
