My boys share a fairly small bedroom and I am looking at getting them bunkbeds when my youngest transfers from his crib when he turns 2. My oldest will be 5 1/2. I'm so afraid my oldest will fall out!! Plus we just put hard floors in the bedroom. Does anyone know of any bunkbeds with high sides to help ensure that he will not fall out?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

You could get a bunkbed that separates into two twin beds and then in a year or two combine them into a bunk bed to free up the space. It may be tight having two beds side by side (depending on the size of the room) but it would give you some time for the kids to mature and when he's older, there's probably less chance of your DS taking a tumble.

Something like this, maybe:

My 3 and 4 yo sons have a bunk bed. My 4yo has never fallen out. We got ours at Bobs. The sides are high enough.
The only thing I do for safety is the ladder goes up during the day, I don't want them playing up there.
heres the one we have

My daughters have been sharing bunk beds since Christmas when they were 2 and 4. We've never had a problem with my older one falling out of the top bunk. Santa got the bed at Rooms to Go.

Our biggest problem has been keeping their younger sister (now 1) off of the ladder.

Our twins got bunkbeds at 3, and we put them together this summer, at 5 1/2. It wasn't falling out I was afraid of - I was afraid of them fooling around on them and getting hurt.

My sons have bunk beds and my older DS4 sleeps up top and has since hes was about 3.... hes fine he just knows its not for playing up there!!

I'd be more concerned about the littler one getting up top and jumping off or something! That being said, we're getting bunks soon for the boys, 5.5 and almost 4. We're getting one that doesn't have a ladder, but stairs on the sides and then the stairs have drawers in them on the sides, so cute and I liked it way better than the ladder for the little ones.

We have bunk beds for my 4 yo ds.
He has never fallen off and sleeps on the top bunk.
Like other posters have said, the concern is playing there during the day. I am not worried about him, but if he has friends over I take the ladder down.
We have a baby. I'm not quite sure what I'll do when she wants to climb the ladder.
I really like the bunk beds. They are the futon kind where the bottom can be a couch or a bed. The futon is super comfy. When I was pregnant it was more comfortable than our bed.

We have bunk beds for our 5 and 4 year old boys... they've had it for a few months now. They have tile floors in their room, which was a huge concern for me. We bought a large area rug and I have it next to the bunk bed.

Also, as soon as we got the bunk bed, we set the ground rules:
1- No playing on the bunk bed during the day- it's not a toy.
2- Younger one is NOT to be caught up top ever and older one not to be on bottom (just to be fair to the younger). My younger son is much more active so I don't think he's ready to be on top.
3- Only sitting or lying on the upper bunk.
4- No leaning over the rails.

We've been very strict with the "rules" and it's been great. No problems.

My DSes, 7 and 3, have bunk beds and they have never been a problem. In fact, the ONLY problem we have had is when our nephew, who is 13, decided to try to separate the ladder from the top bunk.... problem was the ladder is attached with screws.

He broke... literally broke the metal brackets that held the ladder to the bed.

We have bunk beds for our boys and have never had any issues with falling off. We did set up rules from the start, they are not allowed to go up and play on the top bunk. I did take the ladder out when we first got it, but now I don't need to anymore. I was very paranoid when we first got it, I wouldn't let ds (older one on top) even look over the side.
If you are concerned about how high the rail is I would suggest not getting a bunkieboard. Ours has wooden slats so we do not use one. Also just make sure you don't use a deep pocket twin mattress an dyou should be fine.

I would love to do bunk beds for my 2 boys. My concern is my younger son. I won't buy them before he turns 2 but how young is too young to put him on the bottom bunk? Is 2 too young do you think?

for the bottom bunk, whatever age you would put him in a twin. For my kids that was 2. Some people use toddler beds at that age, I never saw the point.

We bought a nice "T" bunk set from our neighbor. We have 2 and 4 year old boys who also share a small room. DS 2 is still in the crib and I am holding off because he climbs the ladder easily. We didn't even think of the fact that the ladder is built in and can't be removed:sad1: It was a rush decision I guess. It is well built and has solid sides up top, as well as a desk on one side and shelved and drawers on the other side. I have no fear for the 4 year old..it is the fearless 2 year old I have to worry about:)
