Bunionectomy?

I'm having a bunion fixed on Sept 7. Have any of you ever had this done? I'm having a complex bunionectomy, where they cut the bone, then stick a pin in it for a month. Please tell me about how long you were completely off your feet, and how well you got around after the initial recovery period.

Also, anyone ever have a double bunionectomy? I'm considering doing that but assume I will have to be totally off my feet for a month, and with four busy kids, not sure that's possible. DH has agreed to do all the after school running around and grocery shopping since I can't drive since the bunion is on the right foot.

I have had it done to both feet several times. The first time I was too young and my DR. was a little to overzelous and didn't think about the fact that my feet might still grow. I have had the surgery where the pin is in the bone, but sticking out of the top of the foot, as well as the surgery where the pin is inside. Both took the same amount of time to heal, but it will be at least a month before you should walk. I would say not to get both done at the same time. Yes it is easier to just get it out of the way, but you have to remember that you will need your good foot for support while you continue to heal. It took a year for my foot to feel 100%, then I had the other one taken care of. Good luck I hope it all goes well.

My mom had this done. They won't do both feet at the same time. She did one foot and then about 9 months later the other foot. The first foot has to heal completly before they will do the second one.

You do have to be off your foot for a month but she was able to go out and about w/in a few days. The first time she used a wheelchair which was a pain but the second time she had a scooter that she rested her leg on. That was much more convienent.
