Bullying incident in 3rd grade...speak up or stay out?

Jane isn't the bully, she is the girl who is being bullied by Mary and she also isn't the OP's daughter.

OP, do you know Jane's parents well enough to call them and tell them what your dd is telling you? They may not be aware of the situation because Jane is afraid to tell them. They should know about it and decide if they want to get involved. You aren't Jane's parent and it would be wrong of you to involve counselors and principals since it isn't your dd being bullied, that would be Jane's parents who should do that. A note to her teacher would make her aware and she can contact the parents and go from there.

I'm surprised it took almost 2 pages before someone suggested calling the parents of the girl that is being bullied to make sure they know what is going on with their own daughter.

I would call them first and tell them that you are willing to speak to the teacher with them and share what your dd has told you. If they do get involved, I would follow their lead since it concerns their dd. If, however, for whatever reason they do not want to get involved, I would still tell the teacher. She needs to be aware of what is going on and watch for other signs of bullying as well.

What a sweet girl you have though. My oldest used to stand up to the bullies, too.

I considered saying something to Janes parents, but here is my main concern with that...after the bully gets confronted by the teacher, bully will most likely say something to Jane about tattling. How do I know Jane wont say "I didnt tell, Rachael did!" After the pinching problem last year, I dont really want to go that route.

I asked DD how it made her feel to see this happen day after day and she said "like I want to puke!". I reminded her that Jane probably feels worse.

I think I will call the guidance counselor and suggest that she tell the teacher so the teacher can catch it in the act. Hopefully no one will know she was tipped off.

Thanks for your advice! and also for the kind words about my DD. Her math teacher told me he hopes his little girl grows up to be like my DD. The funny thing is she is an absolute beast at home but very good and well mannered at school. She has them all fooled!!
