Buing a mattress is worse than buying a car!

One more thing...
If you're buying for a small child, don't skimp. A good set will last (usually) until they move out, whereas a cheapie set will have to be replaced continuously and is less comfy to boot. Plus, a better supporting matt set is better for growing children. And you won't have to go shopping for another one again!

treesinger - thank you so much for sharing all that with us.

I agree that a child's comfort and support should be the priority when buying for them, my DD is 12 and this should be one she'll move out with.

I love my Serta, it is a pillow top on both sides and we try to remember to flip it and rotate every few months.

treesinger,

thanks for the great tips. Love to buy a Stearns, but they are big bucks!

wow,, and here i thought that you harvested new mattress from the spots they grew along side of back roads like you doi with couches and other furniture, You guys mean they have stores a d st uff? do other ppl go out and harvest the wild ones for ya or are the store bought ones grown in as hot house? i've lived in south arkansas all my life and i see the mattresses growing along side the roads all the time.. are the store bought hot house grownn varietys better than the wild ones? the last one we picked wasa free range kinda set,, it was trying to swim away, we caught it at the edge of a creek:)

( ok ok ok.. yeah i'm being bad, i know this is a very stereotipical post and not nice to redneck mentallity, but i couldnt resist:) really do know a guy who has stopped and harvested a mattress from along sid ethe road and the scary part is he really slept ion it:) i just love r ednecks:) )

Thanks for the article. I am going to be putting my daughter in a bed soon and have to go mattress shopping. It's all so confusing

"Sears is selling a king-size mattress for $2400!"

What does *that* come with???? It better be a pretty darn good lover on top of it too!

We bought our, then baby, a crib that converts into what I was told was a "toddler" bed. No. It turns into a FULL size bed.

Finding a FULL size mattress on sale is awful! The lady at one store said I'm going to end up paying more than the Queen that's on sale! great.

It is awful and I sympathize with you!

The best mattress I ever had was a Beauty Rest. Wow! Do I miss it! I have some other well known brand...can't think of the name though. I am sooooooooooooooooooooo sorry I got this one! The store I bought my bedroom set from didn't carry Beauty Rest. :sad1: I should have gone to a store that carried them. I can't stand the mattress I currently have. As soon as this one wears out, I'm back to a Beauty Rest. I had the BR 14 years! Probably should have replaced it a year sooner since I woke up with sore muscles, but still! Thirteen good years is pretty darn good! :teeth:

Aha! My current mattress is a Sealy. Boooooooooo hissssssssssssss!

Oh! I forgot to mention that within the first couple weeks of having the Sealy, there was a wire poking through the fabric near the edge...right where I always seemed to put my hand. :( I ended up calling the furniture to tell them about it. They sent a new Sealy mattress. Still not a happy camper.

When I bought the mattress and bedroom set, I asked the guy for the firmest mattress he had. This Sealy was it. I tried it, then asked...nothing firmer than that? My Beauty Rest beat it by a long shot!

We had a King Koil....after about 2 years the sagging was horrible. We were able to use the warranty to get a new one. We have another King Koil and it is doing good so far, very comfy. We've had this one for about 6 months. Just be sure you get that stain warranty!

FWIW, the Heavenly Bed that everyone raves about at the Swan is (according to Westin) a special order, custom designed 900 coil Simmons Beautyrest 12.5" pillowtop.

Seems like the only special design is the 900 coils, which are not available elsewhere.

Price (for the queen) from Westin is $1,100 plus $150 shipping. That price isn't too bad considering how everyone talks so much about them. I can't tell how they will wear. Some review sites say they will, others say they won't. I do know it's comfortable now, but I think some may find the pillowtop too be soft for their liking, so try before you buy.

You can order them from Westin at the url below. Takes 6-8 weeks and is not returnable.

The one I bought from Walmart for $850 (plus $50 shipping)seemed to have the same specs except for 850 springs. Both had the 9" boxspring.

We love it now, I'll give you an update in 5 years or so.

If your mattress is just worn out or kinda flat, I'd recommend skipping the new mattress altogether and opting instead for a good quality visco-elastic foam mattress topper. You can find excellent ones on ebay or online (I would not recommend buying one in a bedding store, they are usually the lowest quality foam; and although Tempu-pedic is an EXCELLENT product, you will pay 4-5 time as much on that than on comparable products found online). I bought a 3 inch thick, 5 lb. density visco-elastic foam topper (Sensus brand) for $150 delivered. It is the best money I have ever spent in my life. Ever!

Sam's Club has had the queen and king size foam toppers for about $100 (non-delivered + tax).

I don't think I'm going to get a pillow top as I think it would be a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace a foam topper when it gets compressed.

minnie, just be sure to check the quality of the foam before you buy it; if the packaging doesn't have the density listed (should be in lbs./sq. foot), it's probably not the greatest quality. All of the toppers I saw in Bed & Bath were terrible (and some were over $200!) Tempur-pedic & Sensus are 2 great brands; there's another one I can't think of right now that is supposed to be very good quality, too. Oh, they are supposed to have a 10 year life, btw.

Quotebut they do take out the old mattress for that price. Quote

This is why I have a hard time buying a mattress, what do they really do with the old frames.

We went back to a King Size Sealy after 18 years in a Water Bed, and my husband hates our bed, he needs a longer bed. He is 6 ft and he says his feet hang over every nite.

Thanks - I will especially remember the Sensus brand.

So, to sum it up, if you DON"T buy the stain warranty, your l0 year mattress warrantly is invalid.

Correct?

herc.

We love our Verlo, it might just be around here though, paid less than a grand for a queen pillow-top and have slept beautifully for the last 7 years

So all you experts out there, what should I be paying for a quality queen size very firm no pillowtop mattress. I don't care how thick it is I just want to sleep on it for 10 years without thinking about a new one.

This caught SSB's eye.... as just had to buy new beds as moved from apartment to the house ...

Went to one store on Memorial day weekend, and bought twins for the kiddos, and then a Simmon's Beautyrest KING with pillowtop for me... I think it was $995 and included the frame and delivery, etc.... just arrived yesterday... and LOVE it. Had trouble heading out for lemonade stand today... haha!

Best of luck to you!
