Build your own lightsaber Qs

I'm taking my grandson to DL in a couple of weeks for his 15th birthday. He REALLY wants to build a lightsaber, but I have no idea what that entails. I see that you can sign up for a workshop time but could those who know the ins and outs of the process fill me in? For instance:

--what is the price range for a decent lightsaber?
--after you make it, do you just carry it around with you? Is that even allowed?
--I assume if you're flying, you have to be able to pack it in your suitcase when you go back? How does that work? Does it come apart?
--is there a better time of day to schedule the workshop?

Please add anything you think might be helpful! I'm clueless! Thanks

it is one price (I think $219 for WDL) and an experience that is a lot of fun for the participant, or at least when my kids did it and I did it in WDW. I would say for a 15 year old it would be a great cool gift in my opinion.

WHen it is your time you go in as a smallish group, each builder is allowed one watcher. There is a presentation and you choose your Khyber crystal (gives the saber a certain color) and then you build the saber using the parts that are presented based on the theme you choose.... you do not use all of the parts and can pick and choose which ones to customize. The different themes all the same price. Then everyone lights them up as a group.

It is fun for a Star Wars lover. I believe the price comes with a case or at least it used to so you can carry the saber around. But you can take it out and light it up and take fun pictures around Galaxy's Edge etc You can also get additional Khyber crystals etc at the Dok Ondar shop and swap them in and out to change the color.... which you cannot do with the Legacy sabers which are the premade sabers from the various characters.

Building a lightsaber at Savi's in Galaxy's Edge is super fun! My son did it when he was that age and loved it. It's a very special experience.

~It was around $220 when we did it a few years ago.
~You can carry it around with you, they usually give you a case for it.
~You can bring it as a carry on item. They do come apart.
~Night time is fun because you can see your light saber glow outside. Maybe go to Oga's before or after if your grandson is a Star wars fan.

You'll be allowed to go in with your grandson even if you aren't building a light saber yourself.
Make reservations on the Savi's workshop
You'll need to ask a CM where Savi's is or look at the Galexy's Edge map ahead of time. It's hidden away so the first order can't find it!

Everyone covered the other questions but my experience flying with a lightsaber was that it didn't fit in the suitcase. I took it as a carry on and put it in the very front of a full overhead compartment so that my lightsaber was the first thing to come out of that compartment. I had one family member that was able to place it on top of a filled overhead compartment. One person sitting in a window seat stuck their lightsaber standing up between the window and their seat.

It's a great experience and I do highly recommend it for any Star Wars fan!

I can't speak on building as I bought a premade lightsaber as I really wanted Darth Vaders. We were on Alaska, I had the hilt which was in its box in my carryon as I didn't want them to somehow lose it and the blade was still in its own box. The flight attendant was super nice and offered to put it in the coat check at the front of the plane.

I'd def see if you could do that option!

How much time does this experience take? He wants to go the very first thing in the morning. Since I don't want to be carrying it around all day long, I'm trying to sway him to a later time, provided I have that option.

We took ours as a carry on via American Airlines. It fit fully assembled, in the provided case, in one overhead bin. We used one bin for all of our roll aboards, so we could place the light saber over the top of them without anyone else putting their luggage in that one compartment.

I think it was around 30 minutes. That's so cool your son saved up for it! He'll love Savi's. If he has a case for it it won't be difficult to carry around. You'll see alot of other Jedi with light sabers in the park, especially at Galaxy's Edge.

My 10 year old daughter loved the experience. Everyone has to pay and pickout parts for their build outside the secret room so that takes 15-20 min. depending how many are building. About 25 more min. before you rejoin your party. Teenages can carry it around in the case, but I ended carrying it around which wasn't great with a backpack too, but pictures especially in the evening were awesome.

It was a really cool experience for my DD. One thing I suggest is to get nighttime pictures in front of the Millennial Falcon. The PhotoPass Photogs are great!

They will store them for you. They tell you where when you are at Savi’s. They come in a case.

We had ours as a carryon. I did put the hilt in my suitcase and placed the blade in the case between the window and my seat. No problem and it went through Security just fine.

Just did this, so wanted to add you can go to the Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiques (next door) and they sale the different color crystals for $24.99 each. So you’re not stuck with the same crystal color. CMs will display each of the color crystals too. Heads up that the last group was 9pm when the parked closed at midnight.

If you are going to be in the parks in the evening, it's really cool to do the experience in the evening as then he can carry it around with it lit up and get some pretty sweet pics in GE...and you don't have to carry it around allll day!

People covered that you can carry them on to a plane (they are not uncommon in the Disney adjacent airports), but you can also take it over to the shop under the First Order ship (The Depot mabye?) and have it shipped home. It's not that expensive for the basic ground. They will ship it with its bag and all. They will tell you exactly where you can do that (It's the little open shop near the First Order ship/stage).

The experience is cool. It is one price and you will select a theme beforehand, as those are the part sets that you will get to choose from. There are also some additional parts that you can add on for sale in the carious shops and of course different crystals.
