I should point out, to those that are curious, DGD picked a youth Avatar version of the doll. There are bigger, adult versions too. In case some wondered if her's looked smaller or different from others they've seen. I tried to talk her in to getting the full size adult version but she wanted the younger child one. Since it was hers (with her money) and not mine, it was her choice, not mine. They do sell accessory sets for them. I didn't check them out closely since we'd already donated enough of our money to Disney in the Pandora gift shop so I didn't find out if the clothes were universal or fit only the adult versions.

What I said to DW is that they're basically Avatar versions of American Girl dolls.

No. You have to purchase the doll before you start the process to build one.

Thanks @AngiTN I showed her the photo she does not want the doll but was hoping she could still experience building one

It wouldn't hurt to ask a CM if you can see the process without purchasing but I wouldn't get her hopes up.
Best she could do would be to watch someone doing one, if someone happened to be doing one while y'all were in the store.
The kiosk is right in the middle of the store so you can watch somewhat. It's limited to how many can watch, think a photoboth with openings on both sides so you can only see in the openings, not all the way around.
