Our friends just got back from a week at the Caribbean Beach Resort and they had cockroaches in their room. Ewwww. They were told that Disney tries very hard to keep them under control, but it is a subtropic climate and there is only so much you can do. Gross !! I knew I lived in Michigan for a reason.

Anyway- it got me wondering...has anyone ever had a problem with bugs at the Fort ?? It would be awful to bring some home in your rv...in your clothes and everything !?!?!? I'm getting the willies just thinking about it.:scared1:

It is true that Florida has more than it's share of bugs. Only bug trouble at FW I have noticed is our state bird the mosquito, and sometimes sand fleas or noseeums. Sometimes the Palmetto bug is mistaken for a large roach. Palmetto bugs like to come inside esp. when it is raining outside. I don't think they have ever made their way into our trailer though!

The Palmetto bug is just another name for the American Cockroach. We like to call them Waterbugs in Texas, it's still a cockroach though.

We even have them way up here in Pennsylvania. Although, not quite as large. I think I'll be okay with any size of them in October when we go to the Fort......when I was in 11th grade, my high school band went to the Bahamas. When I was in the shower (without my glasses on) I saw that there was this "HUGE" mark on the ceiling of the shower. When I dried off and put my glasses on I looked up.....and saw..........a six inch long cockroach!!! :scared1: I never went in the shower after that without looking up BEFORE I took my glasses off!!! Good thing about that trip was that most smaller bugs just don't seem to freak me out any more.......as much! :rotfl:

I agree, I think maybe most of the land bound bugs fall prey to wildlife at the fort (ie. birds, ducks, bunnies, rats, snakes)

I have a FW bug question for any of those who might know. When we were there in March, we noticed that almost every afternoon we would see these black fly-like bugs. They seemed to visit just for about the two warmest hours of the day and then just disappear. What were they?

Black fly-like bugs sound like they could have been Love bugs! They're harmless, usually just fly around mating and sticking to the front of your car! Be sure to wash them off the car right away because their acidity will eat right through your clearcoat.

Ever been during Love-bug season? That can get annoying. Of course not enough where I wouldn't go.

WDW does a really good job controlling the mosquitoes, which I think are more of a threat than the Palmetto/North American Cockroach. Love bugs are a pain, but harmless, and no, they are NOT a result of some genetic experiment gone wrong from the Univ of Florida or any other college - urban legend. It is the outdoors, however, and as campers we are intruding on the homes of these insects and other wildlife. I have never brought home any "hitch hikers" from FW. If your gonna worry about insects, why not worry about killer bees, fire ants, etc.

Yes Love-Bugs are pretty annoying. Took this last May at Epcot.
