Bugs at night at Contemporary and BLT

Having done a lot of camping...you can try taking garlic tablets or pills the week before you go and during your stay at Disney. They claim that mosquitos are attracted to the oils your skin emits....thus they are attracted to some people and not to others. I have used this when we are hiking in back country among a lot of trees and such. Of course if you don't like the garlic smell on your breath or its taste this is not for you. Good Luck!
CaskPeg:cool1:

thanks since LOVE garlic might try this.

can I just put more garlic on the food - or must it be the tablets?

good to see you posting!

I imagine seeing a pesticide truck blowing smoke around the property may be cause for alarm for some guests due to the chemicals being sprayed into the air.
The thought of a pesticide truck doesn't alarm me. One of my fondest memories as a child is of chasing after the bug truck, with its billowing clouds of white smoke, so thick you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. My cousin got hit by a car while prancing around in the white smoke, but the car was had to go so slow because of the smoke that my cousin was unhurt. The white smoke smelled great. Unfortunately, the great-smelling white smoke was eventually replaced with foul-smelling clearer smoke. Change is almost always change for the worse.

Of course, when I was a child there were still a few people living who were children during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878, which sickened 30 percent of the population, and killed 10 percent of the town. We tend to forget that killing mosquitos is one of the most important things we can do.

Hmmmm, I don't like the sound of this at all. I'm very sensitive to mosquitos and they are uber-attracted to me. Uggg. :guilty:
The good news is that I bet you have a low cholesterol level. What attracts the mosquitos is the cholesterol on your skin, which you excrete more than most people, giving you a lower than normal level. People with high cholesterol levels don't attract mosquitos very much, because they don't excrete cholesterol on their skin.

This sounds interesting to me as I have the same problem. I am a mosquito magnet. I got that from my dad. I can sit on our back porch with 10 people at dusk and I'll be the only person with mosquito bites, and yes, my cholesterol level is very low. When I get my yearly blood levels, it usually is lower than the low on the scale lol. Is there any scientific explanation to this?

If this is true, I'm an anomaly on this one. High cholesterol and tons of mosquito bites. I'm one of those that gets bitten when no one around me does.

My daughter and I are mosquito magnets. For that matter, we attract just about any "biting" insect. I finally found a cool yellow plastic bracelet that we both wear, that has a couple of different types of oil on it, that keeps us from being bitten. She wore it to summer camp for a week in PA (it is good for 200 hours once the seal is broken) and didn't get munched on like she normally does. They are advertised as being good for kids, since it is all natural - at least, the anti-insect part is - I realize the plastic is not!

The scientific explanation is that mosquitos are attractited to heat and cholesterol. If your body excretes a lot of cholesterol, it means it is doing a good job of getting it out of your system, so you will have a low cholesterol level, but you will have a high cholesterol level on your skin, which attracts mosquitos.

People with high cholesterol levels really don't have these high levels from eating ribeyes. Well, maybe a little. But mostly its genetic. They don't excrete the cholesterol onto their skin. So they don't get bitten much, but they are much more likely to die of a heart attack.

This would make a really interesting study in areas where malaria is a problem. You would expect these areas to have higher incidence of heart disease, since people with low cholesterol would attract mosquitos and die off.

I remember those trucks! You could hear their hiss 1/4 mile off and all the kids would run screaming out of their house to greet the truck. (Except me as I was still too young) Oh how I loved watching them go by and the "fog" billowing in toward the house (as my mom would panic and run around slamming closed all the windows :rotfl:.)

Thanks for the memory snapshot!

On our BLT balcony now, and these bugs do appear to be mosuitos. There are a bunch of them amidst the bird leavings, but many appear to be dead or dying. Perhaps Disney is spraying. Last night on the bridge, though, there were literally thousands, coating the walls in a bunch of wet areas.

Also, you would never get me to chase after a chemical-spewing truck in the street, no matter how good it smelled

I usually attract mosquitoes as well, but I recently found a good product that works great without having to spray yourself with a chemical spray. I always hated doing that.
I've had great luck with the small blue battery operated "Off" clip on repellent. Just clip it on your waistband, your bag or backpack, or set it on an outside table such as one on a balcony or patio and mosquitoes will not bother you. I always use it at home and it is a must to have on vacation.

Okay, my response is strong so PLEASE don't flame me......I was so excited about this product and asked my DH to buy me one since I'm a mosquito magnet and am very sensitive to the bite (severe swelling) so I rarely go outside after dusk except for Disney. After reading all the warnings and precautions on the packaging, I was too concerned to use it! The clip on is spewing chemicals all over everything! I guess if you were going out for a walk and just spewing chemicals on the sidewalk or path and yourself, maybe that would be okay, since a large area of chemical repellent is being dispersed into the atmosphere. But if I want to just sit outside and enjoy a beverage or something to eat, forget it because you are in a field of chemicals. Anything you are near including yourself and the table if you choose to place it on that will be covered with chemicals and the warnings make it clear that it will need to be thoroughly cleaned to remove residue. Be sure to READ THE LABEL so you understand the product and follow directions!

I read somewhere that mosquitos dislike lavender, like in soaps or bath oils, I've been meaning to try this...

Hmmm. Interesting. I've been tempted to buy one of those clips, but the bugs haven't been bad here this year...too dry for mosquitoes, we're in extreme drought. I'll be sure to read the packaging first to see just what chemicals are being used before I try one.

You could always wear a "No Pest" strip around your neck on a lanyard and do the same as the Clip-on.

Sorry, I certainly did not mean to imply that the "Off" brand clip-on does NOT contain chemicals. It is merely sold as an alternative to spraying those mosquito repellent chemicals directly on your skin as many of us have probably done. It contains an odorless chemical which repels mosquitoes and the fan circulates it from the bottom of the unit. You will not feel liquid chemical spraying everywhere (or at all for that matter), however, you do still need to follow the precautions as listed on the label as with any chemical substance. Take care :flower3:

Love bugs are the worst! Beware Disney travelers...I have read online the worst is during the last week in August first two weeks in September and also for the last two weeks in May. I had been there during a weekend in early September 2007 and it was impossible to enjoy the outdoors!

....but they don't bite! They just swarm every where! They too are attracted to lights so turn off the lights before you go out onto the balcony. My SIL always keeps a light on in the foyer and front porch. The front porch was a mass of lovebugs. Also since Florida had a bit of drought this year, maybe the lovebugs won't be as bad. I understand drought does affect them.
