Bug Bite experts...

DD 3 got bitten last night in our field. As of last night it was a small red bump (like any other mosquito bite). This morning she complained about it and it is now the size of a silver dollar (or bit bigger), red, swollen, and hot to the touch. There are no obvious bite marks, either. She claims it itches and hurts but she hasn't scratched it (I can tell).

Right now I have ice on it and have marked the size with a pen. If it gets bigger, I will call the dr.

Any ideas what did this? We're in WNY...

Anything that is "hot" to the touch should be looked at.

I'm not an expert, but I get allergic reactions to bug bites too. I use alcohol, neosporin, or lidocaine (sp) to releive the itch!

Since it is hot to the touch, I would call the doctor just to be on the safe side. Since you are not sure what kind of bug it was, you may want to make sure it wasn't some type of spider bite.

My girls have reactions like that to ant, chigger and mosquito bites. I give them a little benadryl, or put benadryl cream on it and see how it goes. If after a day it doesn't look significantly better then I'll take her to the doctor.

I get those all the time and when it first started, I wondered what the heck was going on! I use lidocane and keep an eye on them. Mine get to be the size of a silver dollar as well and I think it is just an allergic reaction. My FIL- dear sweet man that he is always uses hydrocortizone on everything and suggests that!

My son has a strong reaction to bug bites, so his pediatrician prescribed a steroid cream for him. Just a plain old mosquito bite looks horrid and scary on him.
