I think I read BUF has the full body scanners. I prefer not to be bombarded by cosmic death rays, so wondering if security is going to give my family the evil eye if we decline and ask for the good ol' body search.

Anyone with experience?

We went through BUF in December 2010 and did not experience full body scans. DD was randomly selected to have her hand swabbed but that was the only "'extra" security check we experienced!

I'm sure that BUF has them, they are a big enough airport. Passengers are randomly selected for the scan. If you are selected, try to find out if the unit is radio frequency or if it uses ionizing radiation. The US uses both; Canada only uses RF. Bot exposures are extremely low. For the RF it is less than a 1 minute cell phone call, for ionizing less than about an hour of air flight.

If you are selected, you can choose the body search instead. A lot of people do for some reason. Be aware that the body searches are now VERY thorough and personal, including firm touching of areas that were previously considered out of bounds. There is no way I would subject my DD to that; I don't want her first "experience" to be with a TSA agent.

I always choose the scan. I would rather endure about 2 seconds of bombardment by harmless "death rays" than 20 seconds of inappropriate touching.

Thanks so much for the replies.

Yeah, I don't mind the body touching myself - in some crazy way, I might actually enjoy it :rotfl:. I assume I can ask for a female TSA agent to search the wife. Don't think anything can happen with the search of the kids if we are standing right there.

My concerns came about because of this:

Just flew through Buffalo early January and had to go through the body scanner, thing is I didn't know what it was till I was in it. They never told me I was being scanned nor did they give me the option of a pat down. I was quite ticked off but also didn't want to be detained in the airport and miss my flight but I can tell you 100% for sure they have the scanners

We flew through Miami in Decembe, and they have the scanner as well. I wasn't chosen to go through, but my boyfriend was asked. He declined and has the pat down. Its always done by the same gender as the passenger - at least that is my understand. I was given the choice to go through the one in Halifax, or have the pat down. I chose the search as well, and the male agent asked for a female agent to do mine.

The agent in Miami asked my boyfriend if he minded telling him why he didn't want to do it - in a totally friendly, casual manor. He said that he wasn't comfortable with it, for both privacy and health reason. The agent said that was totally understandable. He said there are two kinds, the one they use in Miami is the "good" kind, and he would go through it himself. However, he said that even HE wouldn't go through the other kind.

I think as long as I have the option I would choose not to go through it. I've seen pictures from one of these scanners that was leaked online, I'd rather not have mine there!

I don't fly to Florida, to much hassle. I hear a lot about the scanners and all the negative comments re: privacy, health issues. IMO I would not want someone patting me down. I would rather walk through. I have nothing special, just a little extra padding :rotfl: for any falls that may happen. I would rather have everyone being scanned then to be on a plane and then be thousands of miles in the air and having someone with a bomb or any other type of weapon. A couple seconds or even minutes may save a lot of lives. Again, it is easy for me to say I don't fly and when I did they didn't have the scanners.

BHAHHAHAHA! love your sense of humor! you are right. After reading your reply, I have to say you convinced me no hand search should ever be done. I would kill to go in a body scan anyways. Would a scan uncover these? if yes, let's do it baby-I think I would have a lot of fun with this one!

...and yes these are all me :hippie:

He held me firmly but gently just above my elbow and guided me into a room. I had never been there but I knew this was his room. I knew what he was going to do to me, and I knew I was going to let him. The door closed quietly and we were alone.

He approached silently from behind and spoke in a low, reassuring voice close to my ear. "Just relax."

Without warning, he reached down and I felt his strong, calloused hands start at my ankles, gently probing, and caressing upward along my tender calves slowly and steadily. My breath caught in my throat. I knew I should be afraid, but somehow I didn't care. His touch was so experienced, so sure.

When his hands moved under my skirt to my thighs I gave a slight shudder and partly closed my eyes. My pulse was pounding. His knowing fingers continued upward across my abdomen, my ribcage. And then, as he cupped my firm, full breasts in his hands, I inhaled sharply. Probing, searching, knowing what he wanted, his teasing hands quickly moved to my shoulders and slid down my tingling spine. By entire body was throbbing when he discovered my pink, lace thong.

Although I knew nothing about this man, I felt oddly trusting and expectant. "This is a man," I thought. A man used to taking charge. A man not used to taking "No" for an answer. A man who would tell me what he wanted. A man who would look into my soul and say...

"Okay all done. Here's your purse, ma'am. Have a nice flight."

I've got a little bit of surgical steel in me (nothing like THIS!), and it has never been an issue. Remember that these units aren't as strong as medical x-ray. They do not penetrate the body, just the clothing, so the TSA agent wouldn't see these.

In your case, the scan would probably be the best option as you would be less likely to set off any alarms as you pass through.

And it may be serious, but to the Previous Poster who thinks they will not molest his kids, think again. These rules are applied to EVERYONE regardless of age. The probe of children is just as thorough and probably 10 times as frightening as an adult's.:scared1:

We'll be flying out of Buffalo next month. I am not thrilled with the idea but I am less thrilled with the idea of being in a little car with the family for 48 hours so scan it is:rotfl2:

My dd is 13 and quite modest. Neither the scanner nor the patdown are appealing to her and she is pretty nervous about it. Hopefully it won't feel invasive to her at the time. I think all of the news lately has made her more nervous than necessary, but I do feel badly that she is worried about that at all.
