DH wants to take me to Connecticut for my birthday weekend in July.

What are some budget hotels/restaurants/exhibits/things to do while in Connecticut?

We have absolutely no preference... guide us! :cool1:

There is mystic, ct that has an aquarium and village of how people lived way back when. Then there is mohegan sun which is a casino and there is also an indian museum that is run by the same indian tribe as the casino. There is also another casino called foxwoods. both casinos do have free concerts like i saw bellamy brothers and another country singer at mohegan. you would have to check the website to see who is there. It is never anyone famous. Between casinos, many people prefer mohegan sun. I am trying to think of other things since I live in CT but mostly they are small museums.

Depends upon how active you want to be. The casinos often have big name concerts and Foxwoods has a large American Indian Museum (the only reason I have ever gone to the casinos)
Lots of bed and breakfasts. I like Randall's Ordinary in North Stonington, CT. It is a 300 year old house that serves hearth cooking in period clothes. It is also close to the casinos. Copper Beach Inn and the Ivoryton Inn are also very popular.
Hiking. Rent a house near the beach. Camping at one of our state parks on the beach.
Check out http://www.ctvisit.com/

HAVE A GREAT TIME IN THE NUTMEG STATE!!!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a pretty terrible gambling problem, I live near Turning Stone in NY, and so my DH wouldn't want me hitting the casinos... lol

But we were thinking about Mystic - then of course, we saw the prices of the aquarium ($26 per person? yikes!) and we might be rethinking that...

We are looking for *cheap*! Anything to do that is low-cost... maybe a delicious seafood shack, maybe a little bed and breakfast, something along those lines... nothing huge!

The museum is the Pequot Museum - info at http://www.pequotmuseum.org It is worth the visit - we spent 1/2 a day and could have stayed longer Mohegan Sun has free concerts just about every night in the Wolf Den. The casinos are about 15-20 minutes apart.

Check out MGM Grand at Foxwoods - they were running hotel room specials for $79 a night weekdays.

If you like history, the historic seaport in Mystic is really interesting. And if I'm remembering correctly (it's been about 5 years since I've been there), it is free to walk around & look in the shops, etc. There may be a fee to go on the big ships or into the museum, I can't remember, but you can enjoy a lot of it for free. There are also a lot of cute hotels in Mystic, and you can go to the Mystic Pizza restaurant (from the movie). Even if you decide not to do the aquarium (but look for coupons online, you might find some) Mystic is a nice little town.

camping at Hammonasset,or Rocky Neck is so cheap, and you get the shorelineand romantic walks...unless you're camping while we're there, then sorry about the noisy kids:lmao:
pequot museum is so worth it

If you will be staying in Mystic, I stayed at the Howard Johnson's a few years ago. Not fancy, but clean. It was cheap, had a pool, another named restaurant attached and there was a Friendly's across the parking lot. Mystic village was across the street and the Aquarium was a two minute walk.

Old Mystic is a 5 minute down the road ride.
The Aquarium, village and HoJo's are right off I-95

There is Lake Compounce in Bristol, its a theme park...and is up the road from ESPN headquarters...you can't go in but can drive by if interested.

there's also Clinton Crossings in Clinton, CT. It's outlet stores like Ralph Lauren, Saks, gap, etc. It's also down the road from the beach

I second Hammonasset Beach in Madison. There is a great seafood place called Lenny and Joes's right down the road from there. It's a counter service (they have another full service place up a way in Westbrook) but can still be a bit pricey b/c it's seafood; however, if you like the stuff, you wil LOVE this place. Portions are huge! Also, the lobster rolls are amazing. They also have an ice cream stand and a cute carousel outside. Clinton Crossings is fun and is very close to Lenny's and Hammonasset. There are a ton of cheapo hotels along Rt. 1 but none that I would recommend. Personally, I'd hope for a good rate at the Water's Edge Resort and Spa! :thumbsup2 Have fun!

Depends on where in CT you want to be!

Fairfield County is less than an hour from NYC by train: Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk, Westport--

New Haven has Yale and several museums and art galleries, a jazz festival that has free shows every weekend in July, and it's the home port of the Amistad tall ship, but I think it's out of port now--

There is the Essex Steam Train and Gillette Castle State Park in the river valley section of the state--

Mark Twain House in Hartford and a few museums up there--

As well as Mystic, Old Saybrook/Westbrook shoreline, Hammonasset State Park (and Sherwood Island State Park in Westport).

Can you tell I  CT?

Mystic Aquarium and the Seaport both have a fee, which isn't cheap. But, if you plan on doing both (they are relatively close to each other), there is a less expensive option for a ticket to both. So, if you wanted to make a weekend of it.... Both are nice and a great idea for a couple.

I've always thought it would be fun to go to the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum in Groton, CT (where you can tour a real sub). It's free. Here's a link: http://www.ussnautilus.org/nautilustour1.html. BTW, Groton isn't too far from Mystic if you're doing a road trip.

Also, there a lots of nice parks, land trusts, and reserves in CT that are free or low-cost.

I'll third Hammonasset Beach! My DH grew up in Branford, CT, and when we visit, we always head there. It's absolutely beautiful!

Lenny and Joe's is our favorite restaurant! DH likes to get their whole belly clams, and I always go for either scallops or a lobster roll. Here are some pics from December:

Oh, and if you make it to Lenny and Joe's, don't forget to pick up one (or more!) of their t-shirts.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!

It's a toss up between Hammonasset Beach and Mystic.... gonna have to discuss with the hubby, but these suggestions have been stellar!! :thumbsup2

The Copper Beach Inn is pretty pricey I think. Or maybe it is because I live near it & the toursits stay there during leaf peeping season so I avoid it. I am not sure about the Ivoryton Inn (I drive by both a few times a week when I go out to the store).

There are a bunch of Inn's here too, here is a link:

http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/connecticut.html

There is a small B&B in my town & it is right on Main Street & probably about a 2 mile walk to the CT River from there (if that).

If you are looking at hotels vs Inn's and you are looking at the lower CT river valley, don't stay at the Comfort Inn in Old Saybrook. I don't hear too many good things about that place but I have never stayed there so it is all here say. There is a Super 8 on the other side of that town (close to Westbrook) & it looks fairly clean & was built in the past 5 years.

I would look at hotels in the Mystic area if you are headed to this side of the state.

Two nicer hotels are the Saybrook Pointe Inn (I think that's it's name) & Spa & Watersedge (Old Saybrook & Westbrook they are in).

Mystic Aquarium is very expensive IMO. We were members but I didn't renew this past March. My kids enjoyed it but for me, we got there at 9 & were done by noon.

What is cheaper is Mystic Seaport & museum. And when you go to down town Mystic it is very quaint & I would walk it again if I didn't have my kids to nag me "I want this.."

Here are these cute little toursity maps. You can pick them up at many places in the area.

Here is the Lenny & Joe's Menu BTW (not that I frequent there or anything :rotfl: but we do get the GC in December when they are 20% off).

There is also Johnny Ad's in Old Saybrook which is pretty good too. I think it is greasier. I only eat the lobster rolls at both places.

There is also another seafood place that was on the Food Network a few years ago in Niantic (?) I think. I never ate there but it is on the water.

The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat are also pricey. We only go on our free weekend (being local) & for the Santa train. But you can go there & watch the trains leave/come in & walk thru the Gift Shop & the area out back that has the train set up & a few other things (nothing great, my kids only like to go in there & play with the trains).

Another free thing is to go & walk the town centers. Essex is really nice & you walk to the water area. There is an Inn there too (I think) plus some cute stores. By the water is the CT river museum (never been).

Deep River is up & coming & Chester is blink & you will miss it! My friend shops at the bead shop there.

There is also a ferry in Chester Ferry which takes you over to the bottom of Gillettes Castle. I think it is like $4 or $5 to cross it with your car. BTW, the Castle is pretty neat if you take the tour. William Gilette was a smart cookie back in his day.

Old Saybrooks town center/Main Street is a bit longer/bigger then the above 3.

You can go & sit at the Old Saybrook Docks & watch the boats come in & out of the mouth of the CT River into the sound.

You can go hiking at Chatfield Hollow in Kilingworth.

How about Letterboxing? That is free & it will get you to see some sights off the beaten path.

Don't let my dh read this but it is pretty nice on this side of the state (I am between New Haven & I border the CT river). I am from Fairfield County & I do miss living there but it is quiet & peaceful here. But I would never tell him that!

I haven't been here yet but maybe some day http://www.creamerybrookbison.net/index.html

You say you are coming in July. If you come the 3rd weekend (I think), avoid Deep River center/Devitts Field (I was just there)/Main Street because the Deep River Ancient Muster will be going on. It is the largest one in the world (I think the world). I have never been but if it is a cool night & we have our windows open we can here the music. We are usually picking blueberrys when the parade is on.

Oh yeah you can go & pick local fruits. We go to Scotts in Deep River in July & pick blueberry's.

I think Old Lyme has some old place you can tour & it is by a B&B/Inn. There is also a board walk on their beach (one of them) as there is on Hammanasette.

Spa? The Norwich Spa is supposed to be nice (never been).

There are 2 covered bridges. One is around Haddam/East Haddam & the other is in Litchfield County.

Lymans Orchard is another place (it has a web site) and there is a farm like that in Guilford too, but the name is not in my brain right now.

OK I blabbed enough. I could go on but I won't!

Bishop's Orchard is in Guilford. Is that the one you're talking about?

Bishop's Orchard

DH also said to mention that no trip to Connecticut would be complete without a stop at Pepe's Pizza in New Haven. (They've added a few franchises, but DH wouldn't dream of going to them.) Marco Pizza in Branford is also fantastic. (IMHO, better than Pepe's.)

(What can I say? It's all DisBoards' fault that I take pics of food!)

Yes Bishops, thank you! My brain would not work.

Now I want pizza & a hot lobster roll. Maybe I can talk dh into the lobster roll for this weekend, take out of course.

Pepes is awesome.. go for that ( I'll be there tomorrow with some girls from work - YUM ) Also check out the Peabody Museum in New Haven.. lots of great natural history stuff there - and inexpensive.. walk around Yale - very pretty.. catch a burger at Louis lunch - they invented the hamburger - seriously!

I'm in the Mystic area, if you have any specific questions.
There are a ton of hotels and I'm sure there are lots of specials now (occupancy rates are down due to fewer people traveling). Be sure to pick up a traveler's guide, often found in the McDonald's-type places off the highway.
Summer is high season, so prices can be quite high, but sometimes you can get a deal on a walk-in with one of those coupons.
To save a bit of money you can also stay in Groton (only like 2 exits up on I-95) and then just drive those few minutes to come into Mystic for the day.
Mystic Village is free- it's a nice little shopping area. Walking downtown Mystic is nice, too, although it doesn't take long to get through the whole thing, since it's rather small.
Mystic Seaport is also fun..
Mystic aquarium can get really crazy in the summer time. Locals avoid it at all costs in peak season ;) Early morning or late afternoon are your best bets if you plan to go.
