instead of paying £100 in cruise line transfer fees, i'm thinking of hiring a car from doubletree at DTD and driving to the port.
on budget.co.uk a car for 4 days is £71, add the parking to that and its about the same price as the DCL transfers. and that way we can leave some of the suitcases in the car rather than having to try and squeeze them into the stateoom.
the only trouble is that i cant pay for the rental car now. it says i pay at the rental station. (exact words are: Pay Later price is guaranteed in the currency of the rental country. The conversion rate is approximate and may vary at time of pick up.) it doesnt give me the dollar cost, and on budget.com its $140. i dont want to pay $140, but i dont mind £71. i'm worried that they're going to try and charge me the higher price at the rental place. has anyone had any experience with hiring now and paying there?
also it includes:
Local Tax (TAX)
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Vehicle Registration Fee (VRF)
Airport/city surcharge
Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI)
Unlimited Mileage
is there anything else that i'd need? i think you get the car full of gas, and have to return it full. can anyone confirm this?

Just a quick word of advice,if flying into MCO do not book with Budget, if you have to pay £5-£10 extra to book with alamo or Dollar then do it. ON 28TH Feb we landed at 5pm got straight through immigration got bags etc all by 5.45pm, but didn't leave the airport until after 9pm cause they didn't have enough cars to go round and in the end they had to rent a load of cars from Dollar to give to their own customers, 3 hours is rediculous when you have got 2 19 month old babies, and the Dollar and Alamo customers seemed to be straight in and out. Rant over.

have you tried usrentacar, they have several different pick up locations and you can pay now with all the extras as well. they do several companies such as budget and dollar

To be fair this is not isolated to Budget. We once rented from Alamo(never since) after over 2 hours of waiting they decided no cars left. Ended up having to take a taxi to WDW and ring back the next day, eventually they got us one 24 hours later. Taxi back to airport and the had cheek to try the hard sell and no appolgy for us being without a car for 24 hours.
Thankfully we have never had a problem with Dollar but last rental they upgraded us from Full size to 7 seater van, the rep told us they were fast running out of cars and it was only 2:30pm still plane loads to deal with(this was Xmas day) All rental companies are as bad, they do not reseve cars, its a 1st come 1st served system for them all. If anything I would possibly say Budget fasbreak(register free) is possibly the nearest you will get to a guarenteed car as they remove the keys/car from the system before you arrive, I belive the only company to do this.

Karen. Have you looked into doing a one way rental? Thats what we are doing in August, more cost effective for a 7 night cruise as you save 7 nights parking and 7 nights car rental but still saves a lot for a 3 or 4 day cruise.
Budget have an office within a few min drive of the ship and they do free shuttle, I am saving almost £200 doing it this way, also means 2nd rental after the cruise I get a full tank of gas for free, rental was same price with or without gold option for 3 days with USrentacar/Budget. Never rented direct from a rental company always use a company like USrentacar, carhireflorida.net or airnet no worries then as their prices are all inclusive.

i did look into one way rentals, but we want somewhere to dump the luggage so we dont need to take it on the cruise, we're only doing a 3 night cruise so the price isnt too bad.
we're renting from doubletree suites at DTD, hope they've got enough cars!!

I believe Budget store your luggage while on the cruise but I have not checked that info, we are taking ours onboard if we don't leave at Disney (depends if we stay onsite after cruise or offsite)
With a 3 day cruise it usually works on saving 2 days due early collection after crusie + save $45 parking fees. So its costing you around £75 to store your luggage, on 4 night cruise it worked out at about £80 for each our cruises last year(lower rates than this year), I paid it both times but decided this year for 7 nights I am not paying £200 for storing luggage. I just hope its as easy I have been told to drop the car.

car drop off worked great for us last year wayneg DH was back in less then 30 minutes
he droped me and 1 ds at the port and them himself and other ds dropped the car off
just make sure that you have photo ID with you to get back into the port

first cruise we took we left the bags with bell services for the 3 days no problem

disneys bus tranport is really good
bags are picked up from your resort room (thats if u are staying on site)and you never see them again until they land in your stateroom on board
no hassle

can i leave luggage with bell services? we're staying ASM before, and SSR for one night after

we had no problem doing just that
it was like moving resort
but we let them know what we were doing and would not be picking up the bags until 3 days later

saved a lot of hassle

would i need to arrange this first or can i do it when i get there? which would i store them at: ASM (before) or SSR (after)?
i just presumed i wouldnt be able to do this as i thought it'd be a security risk or something....

if i rember correctly
we just phoned bell services the morning we were leaving POP and asked for our bags to be sent over to SSR and let them know then that we would not be checking in untill after our 3 day cruise
and they were waiting for us after the cruise at SSR
just phoned bell service when we got our room at SSR
hope that helps

thats great to know.... might be worth hiring a car one way now.....

We did this with our luggage when we went on a 7 day cruise, (we sailed with royal carribean, not even disney) we just called down on the morning we were leaving and told them we were going on a cruise and we would be staying at the Contemporary when we returned, when we got back from the cruise we just rang bell services and they turned up a little while later, it's as easy as that.

I don't think the all stars have a bell service that comes to your room so you would probably have to take them to the bell service in the reception.

Just wanted to say that we have never had a issue with budget and used them quite a few times the last couple of years.
We arrived at MCO 2 days after xmas last year and had a major flight delay and we were really worried we wouldn't get a car, it was around half 12 at night and there were no cars at most of the desks including budget, our car was ready and waiting with our name on the rental agreement and the keys ready to go. (they told us if you had pre-paid then the car would be kept). When we got out to the parking lot there was around 2 cars there!!

I had the same query with the dollar/pound pricing at Budget and phoned them. They told me that whatever the dollar equivalent of the pound price quoted on the day you book is what you pay. So they simply do a pound to dollar conversion when you collect, if that makes sense.

I'm travelling on the 1st May, so I'll let you know how it pans out.

I'm looking at renting from Budget, what's the different between Gold and Inclusive?

Gold(or platinum with some companies) gives you extra drivers and a tank of gas included.
Depending who you book with you could have 2 drivers included with All inclusive, USrentacar include 2. so then you only gain a tank of gas.
For shorter rentals its usually worth taking gold, our 3 day rental in August after our cruise it was same price with or without gold. Longer rentals then not the best option.
I much prefer to take gold/platinum as then I can return the car empty and no pressure at the desk on arrival getting you to pay their crazy price for gas.

Would you recommend taking the Gold option with Budget for 2 weeks with only one driver?

Its £40 to upgrade for 14 nights.
Gas prices are around $2/gal, a car holds around 20 gal (some less some a lot more) so worth approx $40 (£27)
To me its worth the £13 difference to have no hassle on arrival and return the car empty, others prefer to return full and sort out at the desk. Personal choice.
