Budget or Uhaul and why?? Need quick replies please. A family member is trying to rent 14 ft truck for move from Chicago to Florida.

Budget!! there reliable and GARUNTEE your truck to be there. We rented through u-haul and they told us they would have a truck on the day we needed, We got there and they told us that they had no trucks because nothing had come in. They refunded our money but we had to move that day so it was heck. I dont trust u-haul anymore

Not to confuse things further, but we used Penske when moving cross-country.:) UHaul's rates were higher.

penske or budget. I rented a dolly from uhaul in Feb along with two trucks and trailers, my brand new car was damaged when the dolly came apart on the highway. Their insurance fought and fought, they insisted I must have removed bolts before I drove it. They also charged me for the broken dolly and late charges because they had to pick it up from the side of the road and they charged me to pick it up. They just kept charging my credit card every day for new stuff. No calls, no nothing. I never got my car fixed. I traded it in, damaged and all. They didn't care if we were hurt or about our stuff.

Whichever one is cheaper... :)

For us that meant U-Haul a few months ago - they had the best rate for our area.

Budget - I use to work for a company that rentaled Uhauls part time. They don't have lifts, only ramps and like the poster above, if a truck doesn't come back in on time you will be stuck without one.

I second this!

When DD and I moved from Virginia to CA we used Penske. They are much qualified and able to handle long distance one way moves. Plus thier rate was so much better than U-hauls or Budgets.

I have used U-haul but only for short distance moves and only because I could not reserve a Penske truck.

On our drive fom east to west we saw hundreds of yellow penske trucks. We saw only a few u-hauls.

We use only Penske now. We actually got the largest truck they had, one way from LA to GA, for less than $150. We were shocked. The truck was almost brand new and made for a real nice move.

After a fiasco about 5 years ago, we will never use Uhaul again. We moved from FL to MS and rented a truck with a tow dolly. We booked from Kissimmee, but were called the day before pickup to advise us they had no truck for us. The agent wanted to just cancel our reservation, which would have left us with no truck for the move. After I yelled at the agent, he finally 'found' us a truck in Lakeland, 50 miles away. Then, they wanted to charge extra for renting from Tampa, instead of Kissimmee. We picked up the truck, and were overcharged several hundred dollars over the quoted price. When we argued, we were told to settle it when we arrived in MS. As it turns out, Uhaul is not a true national chain, but a conglomerate of regional markets, each separate from the other. The agents in MS told us they could not refund us, to call Kissimmee. Kissimmee told us even though we reserved through them, they would not refund us, since we picked up in Tampa. Tampa told us they would not refund us, since we reserved in Kissimmee.

After days of phone calls and emails, I finally got fed up and sent an email to their Corporate Office. Within 24 hours, we had our refund, along with a phone call from the Tampa manger literally cursing me out for getting corporate involved.

This was not the first problem we had with Uhaul, but it most definitely will be the last.

We just rented a u-haul on Saturday. I reserved online and had a 12:00 reservation well I went there at 12:00 and they did not have a truck for me. They had the worst customer service. they guy at the counter said we don't have a truck, come back at 4:15. I showed him my conformation and he just rolled his eyes at me. I then suggested he call around to other dealerships and he told me they were all on a wait today. I then told him that I would keep the truck until Monday because I needed the truck to take things to the dump that closed at 4:00, so getting the truck at 4:15 would not work for me. He finally agreed. I then called the regional offices and registered my complaint. They also could not have cared less. I will NEVER rent from u-haul again!!!!!!

We use Penske. I have heard too many horror stories about reserved trucks not being available at Uhaul to trust them.

We would go with whichever one was cheapest. I've rented from UHaul a few times. There's never been a problem.

Based on my Dad's experiences...Budget.

However, I would suggest pricing out renting space on an ABF trailer. http://www.upack.com You load, they drive. When we moved from AZ to CO it wasn't anymore expensive than renting a truck, by the time you added in gas, and a lot more convenient. My parents also used them to move from WA to FL.

Budget - they were $300 cheaper than Uhaul when we moved ourselves last month and the customer service on both ends was good. There were lots of discount codes on the web and the lady at customer service also tried to find us one when we picked up the truck. However, my dad's currently moving and Budget's not available within a couple hundred miles of where he's moving to, so he has to go Uhaul. I'll mention Penske to him though, that might be another option for him.

This must be new. I rented from Budget to drive from Destin FL to Pittsburgh PA. I flew down on a one-way ticket. I checked every day with them the week before to make sure the truck would be available.

Guess what...NO TRUCK when I went to pick it up. There was a line out the door and multiple people did not get a truck.

I did get them to pay the difference for a Penske truck that was about 30 yards up the street.

As for U-Haul, I rented a trailer once to get from South Carolina back to Pittsburgh. They put the wrong size tire on one side so it kept rubbing on the wheel well.

I will only use Penske from here on out. I've used them twice and the trucks are much newer, in better condition and much more comfortable. I don't even consider U-haul or Budget.

We have always rented with Penske and have been very very happy with them. We have moved from MA to IN. IN to IL. IL to FL and FL to MA all with Penske.

The movers that we use to pack the trucks all agree that Penske is by far the better truck than UHaul. Most of the service calls they get are for the UHaul trucks.

I never checked into Budget because I always got great prices with Penske, especially with the internet rate and the AAA rates. We used them from Chicago to Florida too!!
