Budget New York trip..?

I'm tempted to get tics to the new Mary Poppins for the fall and stay a couple of nights. Can anyone recommend a "kid-friendly" hotel near the theatre? We have 2 small kids 3 and 5 so I don't want to walk and/or take subway too much w/ them.

Thanks

Subscribing to this thread also hoping someone will have add'l hotel suggestions. We're planning an Oct. trip for Mary Poppins! :yay:

We'll be flying into JFK and staying in Brooklyn, we've never been before and from what I'm reading on these boards, the best way to get to the hotel is by taxi....or town car service, any recommendations on a good car service? Any help would be appreciated, I feel a bit overwhelmed......Also, while we're there, we just plan on using the subways to get around everywhere like Empire State Building, museums, broadway............is it pretty easy to get around? :confused3

I live 16 miles from the city and I go quite often. I can't help with a hotel, because I just go for the day.

If you are driving the one thing you have to be careful of is parking. Some lots are super expensive, and some are reasonable. Try to find one that is outdoors, they are usually cheaper and if you go a few blocks away from the theaters they are usually cheaper also.

My recommendations for some things to do are:

1. The Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planeterium. They are in the same building and you need a full day. It is really great for the kids.

2. Madem Tussaund's wax museum. A little expensive but a fun day.

3. Take the tour bus and sit on the double decker out door part and see all the sites with a tour guide.

4. The NBC experience. A great tour through the studios of NBC.

5. The shops at Columbus Circle on 59th street and Central Park West. Very fancy upscale stores and great views of Central Park West.

6. The Central Park Zoo.

7. The Disney Store and Trump Towers on the same block on 5th Avenue.

8. A horse and carriage ride through Central Park

9. Take a ride to the West Village. My favoriate park of the city. And while your there eat at Calente Cab Company on bleeker street. Make sure you take a nice walk around the area, it is the only way to see the village.

10. Back in the theater district eat at John's Pizzeria. It was once an old church that has been converted into a upscale pizza restaurant. It was voted the best pizza in NYC.

11. The Hard Rick Cafe in Times Square. A cool rocking place.

12. Toys R Us in Times Square. Make sure you go on the Giant Ferris Wheel.

13. St Patrick's Cathedral and Rockerfeller Plaza (where the giant christmas tree is displayed every year).

14. The New York Skyride in the Empire State Building. I have never done this, but I heard is is a great simulator ride, kind of like Soarin. It takes you flying above New York.

15. The South Street Seaport in downtown Manhattan.

16. While your downtown take a free ferry ride on the Staten Island ferry. There are great views of the Statue of Liberty from here.

17. Back to Times Square make sure you see Times Square a dusk and night time. It truly is a site. While your there go to the Hershey store for some treats.

18. Have a drink at the Marriot in Times Square. There a some nice views from there.

I think that is enough for now. LOL.

P.S. Forgive me if this stuff was mentioned. I didn't get to read the other replies.

Have fun.

:thumbsup2 Wow! Thanks for the great reply! I will print your list out so I can use it while we're there. Do you know how easy all the things you mentioned are easy to get to? We won't have a car, and will probably be using the subways.............. :goodvibes

To make this thread on topic with website, didn't know if any of you are aware that The Disney Store on Fifth Avenue participates in pin trading. CMs will trade pins on their lanyard.

I returned from a trip to NYC this week. I promised on this thread to post my comments on the hotel we stayed at which I learned about here, the new Marriott Residence Inn at Times Square. So here I am! :thumbsup2

I traveled with my 75 yo mom. The hotel is located at 39th and 6th Ave in midtown Manhattan. It is just down from Bryant Park which is very nice to walk through. They also have free concerts there and screen movies outside during the summer.

The hotel was finished in January. It is about 36 floors high, with about 12 rooms per floor except the top say 8 floors. The rooms up there are larger, I think they may be condos, not sure. We were next to the corner on floor 19, with a really good view of the top half of the Empire State, which was cool.

The room is smallish. The width allows for the one queen bed and two small nightstands and not much else. We had trouble finding a place to stash our suitcases. The nightstands had two drawers each. There is a flat screen tv on a small dresser in front of the window, the dresser has 3-4 drawers. At the foot of the bed is a double sofabed and a small coffee table. You move the coffee table to pull out the bed and then you cannot pass between the bed and the sofa, so you know it is smalll.
The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, about an 18 cubic foot fridge with icemaker, a dishwasher and microwave, small sink, toaster, nice coffee maker and a crock pot. There were four place settings of stainless, dinner plates, lunch plates, bowls, mugs water and wine glasses. They supplied us with papertowels, and coffee and sugar and equal. The maid ran the the dishwasher for us each day. there were some pots and pans and utensils, dish towel, dish cloth, etc.

The bed linens were premium and the bath linens nice. The bath was small, with marble surrounds. There were 4 small drawers and a cabinet under the sink in the bath and 4-5 drawers and cabinet space in the kitchen.

We had free internet access.

The third floor of the hotel is taken up entirely by the breakfast serving area and lots of seating, a small gym and a small bar.

The breakfast was good, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, hash browns,
make your own waffles, oatmeal and toppings, yogurt, limited cut fruit, bananas and oranges, various cererals, lots of pastry choices and breads, juices, soft drinks, coffee and tea.

Monday-Thursday they serve a one entree dinner, we had chicken parmesan on Monday. It was only ok, they also had a limited salad.

The room was very clean, it is new. The carpet was nice, the kitchen area had laminate wood floor and the bathroom marble I think.

We had one issue with the a/c. We had 3 different guys come up and look at it. They responded very quickly but ultimately had to change out the unit. It was a Trane unit, not sure what was wrong. Because of the inconvenience, they comped us one night. Since we had a discounted rate anyway ($199/ night) we did very well.

The location was perfect for us as this was a theatre trip for us. We saw three Broadway plays and one off Broadway. We were within easy walking distance of all but one theatre. We took cabs to and from the airport ($35-$40 each way). We took cabs a lot around midtown, the fares were always less than $10. We also took a cab to the west village (great area). We took a cab to the Time Warner bldg and Central Park. We also did the subway some, for the novelty. It was very well located for shopping as well since there are many stores on fifth avenue.

Would definitely stay here again especially if on a theatre trip. We walked to attend mass on Sunday at St. Patrick's.

We noticed some street noise in our room. The window did not seem to close properly. I would ask for a high floor. Lots of traffic on 6th avenue.

My brother brought us fresh flowers, and the front desk had a vase sent up. The service was good, all the door men, bell boys, front desk people, kitchen people, housekeepers, were very very good. The a/c was our only real issue, and they responded quickly each time we called. It seemed that it had to wait until the mainenance supervisor came in to really figure it out. They would reset it, and it would operate but shut off a few hours later. Wierd.
Unfortunately, there was a heat wave the 4 days we were there wo the a/c was important. We were hoping for cooler weather.

Hope this helps someone. If you have any questions, ask away.

We also just returned. We ended up staying at the Holiday Inn Express on 5th & 45th, just up from Times Square. For a price of $215.00 it was a bargin. It was also $35.00 per 24 hours to park our car just down the street. Every other decent hotel in the area was either sold out or at least $75.00 or more a night the days we went.
Also, free breakfast, free high speed. We had a king bed. Seemed recently renovated. Small but typical NYC hotel room. Staff was great. I would stay there again in a minute.

We also looked at the Doubletree in times Square. It is also in a great location and was very nice. It was sold out for when we went, but was our first choice. We stopped in and had drinks and looked around the hotel. I'm sure it will be much more expensive. I would also look into that if we had both kids with us.

This thread has been great. I've gotten a ton of information for planning our upcoming trip to NYC. We are going to take the advice of many people here and stay in New Jersey. I have booked the Sheraton Suites on the Hudson in Weehawken, but now I'm starting to second guess myself! I love that it's right on the river and we'll be able to see the NY skyline, especially at night. I've read the ferry can be expensive, so I'm wondering if we should move to either the Hilton Garden Inn or the Embassy Suites in Secaucus. We really want a hotel with a pool, so that is a factor. We are staying 4 nights and will probably spend 3 days in the city, so ease of transportation is also important. Secaucus seems great because of the choice of restaurants available, and of course the shopping looks great. The price of the Hilton is great, but will the bus situation (having to cross the busy highway) be an issue? There will be my self, DH, DD-10 and DS-8. Thanks for any advice/help you can give me.

just bumping to bring this thread back to the top as I am now planning a trip to the big apple!

So excited to find this thread!!! :cool1: DH and I were just talking about this last night. He may have a business trip nearby and the dks and I would fly out to meet him after his work obligations for a 3-4 day trip!! :cheer2:

The ideas here are awesome....keep them coming. :dance3:

We are also thinking of a NYC trip for the Comic Con in February at the Jarvits Convention Center. Anyone familiar with the New Yorker Hotel?

I've stayed at the Sheraton Suites and it's great. The ferry into New York is more expensive that the bus from Secaucus. But the ferry is an attraction itself. It's a great ride and a wonderful way to see The City. Also, keep in mind your ferry ticket also gets you free bus service to many of the tourist areas of Manhattan.

My last trip to NYC was a semi budget one. We stayed at Comfort Inn in Long Island City which is right outside of NYC. They are a block from the subway and it was a 10 minute ride into the city.

We paid $80 a night three years ago, I am not sure of the rates now. It was less than a year old when we were there and we were really surprised in how clean & nice it was. They had a full cold breakfast, cereal & milk, pastries, muffins, things like that.

For fun we saw the Producers (very good) & Beauty and the Beast (ok, the show was good but the theatre is old and small and my knees were crammed into the back of the person in front of me). We also did the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Times Square, Little Italy, and Chinatown. We also went to the museum that had all the stuffed critters in it. That I did NOT like. Yikes- nothing like seeing a baby elephant killed just for a display.

Be sure to check and see if you have any corporate discounts. When I came back I found Citi had free museum passes available, I would of saved our group $100.

Have fun!
