That would be cold process soap and, in addition to the curing time, can take a bit of practice to get right. You can end up making a batch, having it cure and then realizing it's not so great.
If you'd like to do something a little more simple for Christmas and to get a feel for soapmaking, I highly suggest starting with melt and pour soap base. There are all kinds of things you can add to it. You can add just fragrance or color for something really simple. Or you can research what certain essential oils benefit different skin conditions and go from there. To this day, the only soap that keeps my skin clear is one I make from a simple melt and pour base and add different essentials oils and kaolin clay to... it ain't pretty, but it works!
