Budget GPS

We're driving next month and are talking about getting a GPS. We can do without but thought it might be nice to have. The only thing we know we would want is speech. We don't want to spend a lot - really not more than around $100 or so. We don't need any extras, just something to get us from point A to point B. Any recommendations? TIA.

Check out this search I did on slickdeals. They are always posting some great deals and you'll also see some opinions on the units or not.

Another one to look for is the Omnitech (I forget which model). Every now and then Staples has it for $89 with a $35 rebate. I got one and it's a basic GPS that serves my purpose. It is also hackable (search slickdeals and they have instructions) and you can add additional features or a different map system.

Keep in mind that you do want Text to Speach (TTS). I think they all have it now. But that's when they say turn left on Main Street, instead of just saying turn left in 500 ft. All other features such as points of interest, bluetooth, FM tuner are nice to have but not critical for getting from A to B.

While I agree that TTS is a great feature, I hate listening to the voice constantly. Since I use mine with the volume turned very low and since I prefer to look at the street name on the screen instead this one is fine for me. I love it. I missed a ferry here in CT a few weeks ago, had my 4 yo in the car with me (just the 2 of us, no dh) and I was able to drive around to Long Island using my Nuvi 200 with no problems whatsoever.

I think for your purposes TTS isn't necessary.
