Budget freindly mini vacay to Chicago....

I have a BOGO coupon (Entertainment Book) for the Sea Dog Architectural River tour that is good M-F. It leaves from Navy Pier. You get a short thirll ride followed by the river tour. If you'd like the coupon, PM me your info. I think I also have one for the Hancock observatory.

I second Hotwire for hotels. We usually choose Streeterville or Michigan Ave as our target location.

the Air and Water show is usually the 2nd or 3rd weekend in August. I know you said no weekends, but Friday you will see them practicing which is awesome! I am partial to the Sheraton Towers on Illinois street...lap pool on the 7th floor..but no breakfast included. You can walk easily to Navy Pier, Water Tower, River from there...we walk all the time in the city...usually 3-5 miles from various locations We walk from Union Station to wherever...it is very easy to navigate. The Art Institute is pretty cool and has a new area on the 3rd floor for dining ( maybe 20-25 per entree?) modern and sleek...it is right next to Millenium Park and you have cool views. We love Millenium Park, usually always something going on there. The beach is free! Navy Pier is still fun, the beer garden at the end of the Pier always has some sort of band playing and there is no charge...we always walk out on the pier, take in the atmosphere. Blue Man group would be fun to see, lots of theater shows going on. Last summer was a blast ( literally) since Transformers 3 was being filmed...sometimes it is cool to just wing it, I know Venetian Night is near the end of July..again, free and fun fireworks. It is a fun atmosphere too...most stake out a spot early and picnic/party but you don't have to do that, you can just sort of meander about, grab a beer etc. Look into the House of Blues to see whos playing around when your visiting...
this site:
http://www.choosechicago.com/events/Pages/calendar.aspx

gives just a sampling of things going on...you can play with dates and also look up conventions. Summer is the BEST time to visit, but hotels also know that...so accomodations will be your main cost. There a TONS of restaurants with outdoor seating, music, just about any type of food you can think of. I really like the Wit Hotels rooftop dining/lounge..honestly it is worth checking out. Not budget, but not insane either. It is a hipper crowd, fun. You can also hit Trump Towers 16th floor outdoor lounge..a little pricey, but also cool and the whole Trump atmosphere without dropping a ton.
We just walk around, cameras in hand ( yes, we have lived here for over 40 years, I still take hundreds of pictures when in the City) and I personally always recommend going up in the Sears/Willis Tower and walking out on the ledge..it is SOOOOO coool! Weekday crowds shouldn't be too bad and if you have a clear day it rocks. Once you are up there you can stay as long as you like.
Hope it works out and you can visit!

Awesome, amazing ideas everyone! The one thing I am really worried about is the walking. As I said earlier DH is a disabled Vet. His ankle and foot were crushed and his back was broken in multiple places. It took several surgerys to get him walking again and the back never healed correctly so while he can walk, distances are a bit difficult to say the least. He never walks without the use of a mobility device (cane, walker, or rollator). It looks like alot of the places we would want to go would require walking once we got there so we would have to be careful about the amount of walking to get there. Busses or trains would work as long as we could manage without walking too much more than a few blocks between stops. We could probably fit some cab rides into the budget but I'm geussing if we took cabs everywhere it would really eat up the budget. Anybody have any ideas? Do you think it's possible to figure out a low walking itinerary?

If you stay within a block of Michigan Ave., you can cut your walking down significantly. The various routes on Michigan will get you to any major attraction: Hancock, Museum of Science & Industry, Art Institute, Museum Campus, Union Station, Lincoln Park Zoo, etc.

If you want a budget river cruise, take the water taxi.

As far as food is concerned, Chicago is an amazing food city. You said that you're foodies, but what type? Fine dining? Haute cuisine? Or more chow hound with good food?

You can do Chicago cheap for sure, especially if you use public trans, which can be a pain in the butt but it's cheap. I would priceline your hotel, you can get good deals that way, check River North, the Loop, North Michigan Ave.

HOWEVER, there is a lot of walking in Chicago if you aren't taking cabs. Even with public trans, I'm not sure if you could always work it out where you could take a bus to an L and never walk more than 2 blocks.

I take public trans everyday and so does my husband and we walk several miles each time if we are going to different places.

If you are going during the week you can save a ton at restuarants. I would look on yelp before you go because a lot of restaurants will run specials during the week, good prix fixe menus (did I spell that right lol), half priced wine and so on.

If you guys are foodies, I have a TON of recommendations :lmao:

Kuma's (best burgers ever named after metal bands but this is a bar if you aren't into that kind of thing)
a good Chicago steakhouse like Gibson's or the Chop House, these are can be very expensive though
Bonsoiree
Piece (right of the L so very easy to get too, pizza and brewery)

There are a ton of good ones downtown if you don't want to travel far (Atwood, Bin 36, and so on).

Don't forget just walking around in Chicago is fun, you have Millenium Park, Lincoln Park Zoo, the lake.

Someone mentioned the Signature Room, I recommend the Signature Lounge instead on top of the Signature Room. And use the restroom, the ladies restroom has the same amazing view as the lounge!

Yes! I recommend this. The bathroom is a MUST SEE!!

The Signature lounge only has a 1 drink mininum. So its really cheap to get a great view.

I love Chicago-but a warning-you Can't do it all- and if you try to it will cost you alot. Here is my trip report with lots of money saving ideas.

I got the hyatt for around 65 a night on priceline and before that got the Palmer house for around the same amount- check out betterbidding.com for recent "wins" so you have ideas about the cost. Travel zoo is also a great site to join.

Thanks again for all the info. Everything you guys have posted looks great. A few of those restaurants looks like they are exactly what we would be wanting. We are foodies in that we appreciate good food on every level. It can be diner food that is just great tasting or completly fancy with amazing presentation. We simply look for and appreciate good dining experiences no matter what our budget so I love getting recomdations on restaurants.

For breakfast, I'd recommend Yolk. :) http://www.yolk-online.com/

And if you can, try Rick Bayless's restaurant, XOCO. It's small and chaotic, but the food is fabulous! http://www.rickbayless.com/restaurants/xoco.html
