First off, we have the money to do this. What is freaking me out is that we are spending it, lol.

My DH & I are going out for New Years Eve for the 2nd time in our marriage. The first was 9 years ago and that was just for dinner. Our usual celebration is to bring home a steak dinner and watch the ball drop after the kids go to bed. This year we decided it was time to do it up right. Especially since my husband proposed in my living room 10 years ago --12/31/00

Nana & Grandpa are keeping the kids overnight for the first time. We got a hotel room, reservations for dinner @ Ruth Chris Steakhouse and tickets to a old-Vegas style Jazz club party. $$$ for all of it. People on this message board could probably plan a trip to the World for what this evening will cost us... (or about half the cost of our upcoming 5 night family cruise only in April!)

Then I had to buy clothes: sequined sweater jacket, silk shell, nice slacks, new shoes [my old pumps litereally disentagrated when I put them on], undergarments & a clutch (I don't carry a purse-ever). My outfit costs $150 and that's after the 30% off Kohls coupon. I usually spend only $300 a year on my clothes! At least the jewerly I already own will work for accessories. BTW - the wedding dress you see me in my sig pictures only cost $300, lol. And I can wear this outfit again for formal night on our cruise.

Again, we have the money - we rarely do this and it will be a fantastic experience. Just help me get over the sticker shock so I can relax and enjoy!

I understand, I hate spending money but think of it this way, it is not happening that often and you will probably use the outfit you got for other occasions, next time you will just have it already. Also think about how much you would have to spend if you just cooked a holiday diner (I will do my shopping tomorrow and it will cost me a lot just for 4 of us). So just enjoy!!!:goodvibes

Well, I think it will be a fantastic time, and I am jealous!

Just think, you can wear the outfit for formal night on the cruise - one less thing to buy for vacation.

Have a wonderful time! My DH and I should do something like this; we usually go to a great little bed and breakfast 1/year, but we didn't this year. Enjoy your night! Think of it as an investment in your marriage. :)

I understand what you mean! It's so hard to swallow these kinds of big expenses, but i salute you for not having done it before! you deserve it for all the other inexpensive nye's that you have had! It's hard not to think about the money going into one night, but one night can be magic ;)

Um, yeah. I think I just spent ten nights IN Las Vegas, with flight, hotels, and rental car costing me less than what you're probably paying :umbrella: but don't worry!!! I spent a LOT more while I was there!

And this IS a big anniversary. It's not as if you splurge like this every other week.

It's tough to spend the money even when you've saved for it, isn't it? Enjoy your night out, relax, and bask in the fun!

Have a wonderful time -- you deserve it!! DH and I did something similar for our 20th, and I felt similarly guilty.

If you are staying overnight at a hotel, do not forget to pre-order breakfast before going to bed. After all, indulgence is worth doing well!

Doesnt sound like a budget buster to me. You have the money and are willing to spend it. Just sounds like a little bragging instead. But its your money and you deserve to enjoy it. Have a great time and savor every minute.

Sounds like a bargain on clothing. You got undies, sweater, pants, shoes and handbag for $150, that sounds like a super deal. My patent clutch alone cost me $80!

As a regular biz traveler I have learned to NOT pre-order room service breakfast. The few times I have preordered it tends to arrive less than piping hot. If you check 8:30 on the card they will sometimes hold onto your food and wait till the appointed time to knock on the door, all the while your food is cooling. Just leave the menu bedside and call RS from bed when you wake up.

OP here, thanks for all the responses. Here is the outfit. I think I got a good deal (though nothing is leather), it's just that I haven't spent that much money on a single outfit since my wedding! I am a t-shirt, jeans & tennis shoes kind of gal as a stay-at-home mom. I look through fashion mags and scoff at 3 figure outfits and now I'm wearing one, lol.

When I was at Kohls buying shoes, the lady checking me out had been to the Jazz club we are going to and she couldn't say enough good things about it. Makes me confident we made a good decision. We just don't spend money like this on ourselves - our kids yes, as a family, yes - but as a couple not so much.

Thanks again for all the comments and yeah, maybe I'm braggin a tinsy little bit :) but I think I am just excited, is all!

I like your outfit. I saw this cardigan at my local Kohls, very pretty. I think this kind of outfit you can wear everywhere, any time, special occasions, and so on. Good investment. Hope you enjoy the night out with your husband.:goodvibes

I think of it this way.....a nice night out with DH every now and again and keeping the spark alive is a lot cheaper than a divorce. :lmao: Consider it a well spent investment in your future and have a wonderful time! :dance3:

Try really hard to let go and forget the cost so you can enjoy it. It would be ashamed to spend all that money and then worry about the cost.

I know that we could never enjoy something that expensive as we could not get over the cost but when we do spurge, we forget the cost and enjoy it.

well, then it's your turn, isn't it?

And to the PP who said 'sounds like a bit of bragging'....THAT is exactly the sort of snotty remark that keeps me from sharing details of my life withe my 'friends'. One is soooo eat up jealous that she resents NOT hearing that I'm miserable on the verge of suicide that I just pretty much avoid talking to her at all.

OP, enjoy your wonderful evening out. In the long run, memories are all 'they' can't take away from us.

I didnt say it to be snotty. If you read my entire post, I wished the op a good time. I just meant that this sort of expense is not a budget buster. A budget buster is when you finally get your car paid off only to have some idiot plow into you and then your insurance totals the car for alot less than you can replace it. That's a budget buster. Choosing to drop a bundle on one night of fun and then pointing out that it is more than most people spend on a vacation is, in my opinion, bragging just a bit. But that's okay because I actually like reading posts like that as opposed to the ones where one or both parents have been out of work for 18 months and they are just this close to losing there home. Bring on the brag posts!!!! I'd love to see more of them!!!!
