no, you set the password, so it's not a hardware issue. It's not a problem with the computer. It's a problem someone using the computer created by setting the password.

...which is easy enough to have happen if someone clicks through too quickly on things without really knowing what's happening.

I've had to re-load the operating system on our family laptop three times over the course of the last two years because someone did something they shouldn't have, without realizing it. The fastest and easiest recovery was to just start over.

yep. happens all the time & especially with kids, who are notorious for not reading something because they think they know what they're doing (well, at least that would describe my kids).

There is also a possibility that you downloaded a virus that set a password on the hard drive (i.e. Set something in the boot record)

Does Target still sell the same model? I am not saying I condone this, but you could always buy a new one and take the old one back.

Sorry to hear of your difficulties! We have had an Acer netbook for several months now, and have had no problems whatsoever.

The girls have had theirs since C~mas and my SIL has had her's for a couple weeks, no complaints ~ I want one.

I love my Asus...my is the same as this one only I got the 12.1" screen...LOVE it!!!

Really? I'm not sure the Target by me would be that thorough.

The sn isn't printed on the receipt. At least not at our target.

We have an EEE netbook and have had no problems with it. I agree, it sounds like your issues are software or user error, not a hardware defect.

It may not be printed on the receipt, but computer equipment generally has all identifying serial numbers on the outside of the box which can be matched to the sticker on the machine. This is to prevent anyone from switching out a computer with better "guts" for the same model with lesser components.
