Budget Boston day trip?

Can anyone suggest an affordable parking place? We are going in May, staying downtown at the Custom House, but trying to avoid the $40/day parking charge. We are flying into Manchester rather than Logan (much cheaper from here) so we do need a car to get to Boston, but not much around Boston although we would like to do Cape Cod for a day and maybe Plimoth Plantation. Any suggestions?

Check the MBTA Parking lots. If you are willing to take the T into Boston some of them allow overnight parking. For example on the Greenline at the Woodlands station if you park overnight the charge is only $7 per day. On the Redline at quincy Adams station overnight Parking is $8/day. I believe overnight parking is also allowed at Alewife station and some of the Commuter Rail stations. You can check which lots allow overnight parking by going to MBTA.com and checking on the info for the various stations.

Just fyi - if flying to Manchester there is a shuttle you can use which takes you to I think Sullivan Station on the orange line which is two stops from North Station. You can get to Plimouth Plantation by commuter rail/local shuttle or cab but it probably is more convenient to have a rental car.

My 87 year old father used to work as a civilian employ at the Charlestown Navy Yard and helped install the flourescent lights on the USS Constitution. You would have thought I tortured my kids by touring the ship but they forgave me when I took them to the Constitution Museum afterwards. I don't know much about parking because we live near Oak Grove and don't usually drive. I can tell you if you park in the wrong garage near Children's Hospital they don't validate. Blame dh for that one.

Strayboots sounds like fun. I saw it on Groupon or a similiar site before but didn't know what it was.

There used to be a shuttle between Manchester Airport and the Anderson Transportation center in Woburn, MA (which has a park and ride stop for Logan Airport). There is a commuter rail stop right there.
