Kids dont need elaborate parties, they just are happy to spend time together. It can EASILY be done on a budget! Anything that is something outside of your normal daily routine will be a hit with the kids. Get a pack of balloons from the dollar store and decorate the main room where the kids will be. ($1) Or since it's summer, water balloons!
I have found it least expensive to not have a (gasp) Disney Theme parties or some specific theme. I always spend way more on the decorations and think about it -- where do the decorations end up?
Pick a color as a theme -- if you chose a RED party, dollar store has red plates, napkins, cups etc. Cheap and easy! Make invitations on the computer -- again EASY!
Actually, when my kids were small, I went to the Oneida outlet and bought a dozen fancy glass plates. They were $1 each. I use those for every birthday -- they will go with every color of napkins and I have gotten my moneys worth out of them several times over. And its less trash!
I used a Michaels coupon several years ago and bought an alphabet set of cookie cutters. I make some sugar cookie dough (Betty Crocker $1.59 a pouch)and let the kids cut out the letters spelling their names. Then they sprinkle with colored sugar and we bake them. While they are playing other games, I take the cookies out of the oven, cool them, put them on a paper plate or in a plastic bag -- cover with Saran , tie with a bow and presto -- thats their treat bag to take home.
Bake your own cake -- or cupcakes -- or buy a bucket of vanilla ice cream and let the kids build their own sundaes. Teddy grahams floating on gummy lifesavers on top of light blue frosting looking like a pool was always a hit in our house.
A movie at home with popcorn is always a hit. Redbox movie rental $1. I buy a few boxes of movie candy and have the kids share.
Heres a fun game. As each guest comes in the door, pull them aside and ask them one thing about them that the others dont know. Keep the list secret and when everyone is there, read the items out loud one at a time and have everyone guess who said what.
Get a roll of paper from your local newspaper. Often times, they will sell you an end roll for $1. Roll it our over your table and have each of the birthday guests draw their own placemat and decorate with markers or crayons.
I used to work with a gal who claimed her DD party cost over $300 and she was trying to get the ex-husband to pay half. I didnt have the heart to tell her that I has a fun party for my DD and it cost about $35
..believe me, the kids had just as much fun.
Make two teams .Get some big clothes and have a race from one side of the yard to another -- first person puts on the big clothes and big shoes/boots and has to get to the other side -- take it off -- next person outs it on etc.
Be sure to take a group picture or a picture of each guest with the birthday child. Print those and put one in each thank you note.
Possibilities are endless. Have a great time planning your party!
