We desperately need to remodel the bathroom on our main floor. It currently has the existing vanity/countertop and floor from the 50's and is in terrible condition. We are doing our kitchen in April so there isn't alot of extra money to spend on the bathroom. There is a porcelin tub that is in excellent condition - but it's grey:eek: We are thinking of doing a tub surround, wainscoting, new vanity and countertop and toilet bowl. I don't think it is in the budget right now to have ceramic tile done around the tub and on the floors. Do you think I will regret it if I do the tub surround and the wainscoting?

Why not do play off the grey tub and do the bathroom grey and white?

Grey tub, white wainscoting, white tub surround. Make the vanity grey with a white counter or white with a grey counter. Sink & toilet white. Floor white & grey tile.

My friend just bought a house and the bathroom is grey and white and it is striking.

Plus, grey is a pretty good neutral and will work with pretty much any color accessories (towels etc.) to introduce some color.

I love grey too!!! We have a 50's bathroom as well that I am redoing as inexpensive as possible. The tub (avocado green) jealous I know and the tile surrounding it are in excellent shape. I am looking into having the tub re-porcelined in white and leaving the tile which is a light yellow. So your lucky I would rather have the grey ;) Do the wainscoating and look at tile flooring they have some really cool stuff, I have been looking for my bathroom. White and grey look nice!!!

Check at Home Depot or Lowe's or whatever is close to you for some clearance items. We got several boxes of tiles for our bathroom for pennies. The boxes were opened and had several broken pieces in them, but we bought a few extra boxes and spent less due to the discount than we would have if we bought the right number of perfect boxes.
We also got a clearanced toilet at HD. Still works, it was just an older design.

Around here, a tub re-glaze runs about $200 for white glaze. A bit more if you want a tint. If you found fixtures on clearance, reglazed the tub and repainted, you might do the whole room for less than $1000! (still a chunk of change, but not as huge as it could be, right?)

Good luck!

I just remodeled my main bath last year. I already had a white tub, so no changes needed there. I put in a new ceramic floor and it was probably one of the least expensive changes I made but made the biggest difference! Do it now while you're making changes. One of the best deals I found was a granite countertop which included the sink at Home Depot. It was $199 in any size! I agree with everyone else, I would play off the gray and do gray and white bathroom with color accents.
