As I was folding laundry this morning, I pulled out my favorite slip, which was wadded and stuck together with pink bubble gum.

Next, my son's t-shirt had another piece of it stuck to his sleeve.

Another piece was on DH's sock.

Finally, the culprit: My DD's pink denim shorts has a big wad of the stuff in her pocket:rolleyes:

So, I go and ask her, "Jennifer? Did you have any GUM in the pocket of your pink shorts that you put in the laundry?????

Jennifer says, "Uh, oh . . ."

So, now wise DIS'ers, I have a burning question: How do you get gum that has been through the washer and dryer out of clothes????

I cannot help you at all with the slip, but for the other stuff, maybe get out the iron, and iron where the gum is (put a towel between the iron and the clothes) enough to soften it, and try to peel it off. Otherwise, I have NO idea

Yipes.

We use Ice at my house , It gets really hard and brittle - most of it should come off - good luck..

DD did the same thing in a load of jeans,(thank goodness they were sturdy) We did the ice thing, (rubbed ice and broke the gum off in little pieces as it froze, then ran the load again using lestoil. It took forever, but it finally came out. Good luck

I don't really have an idea but wanted to wish you GOOD LUCK!!!:D
Is there a Hints from Heloise website? If anybody has the answer, it'd be her.

If you have a can of compressed gas duster it should freeze the gum the same as the ice would, only quicker and much easier.Good luck!

I couldn't believe when I read your thread's title! My own DD left gum in her pocket last week and my whole dryer was coated with it! It took alot of "Goo Gone" to clean it up, and it's not easy trying to stick your head in there and clean. I was NOT a happy camper that day. I feel your pain!;)

Household Hints from RMD??????? Do my eyes deceive me???? ;)

Great tip, Dan, I was going to suggest the ice too.

I use this stuff called Goof Off. I bought it in my local grocery store because I too have a dd that leaves gum in her pockets

I too am amazed by RMD and his helpful hints ;) :teeth:

According to my "How to Clean Practically Anything" book by Consumer Reports:

Gum: Chill with an ice cube and scrape off what you can. Blot with citrus solvent. Or apply a teaspoon of extra-strength BenGay to gum, heat it with a hair dryer, and pick off residue with polyethylene (NOT PVC or Saran) food wrap. Then blot area with the detergent solution and rinse with warm water. Don't use peanut butter; it may compound the problem. (The "Queen of Clean" says to use peanut butter to get gum out of hair.)

Detergent solution: Mix 2 teaspoon of mild clear or white neutral detergent (a mild dishwashing liquid containing no alkalis or bleach) in 1 cup warm water. Do not use laundry detergent, which contains optical brighteners that may discolor the fibers.

Uh,Deb,we aren't talking about what you are doing all day we are talking about gum in clothes.Keep Up!;)

I've endured this treasured experience as well. I just spray the spot with stain remover and wash it in hot water until it comes out. I do this alot. My 4 year old has just noticed what a nifty hiding place his pockets are for all the candy his Mom-mom gives him. (He doesn't even like the candy, he just likes to hide it in one of the 90 cargo pockets on his shorts)
