BT Customers & Use of the Internet

Can anyone give me some advice please.....

I am just about to move into a brand new house and the only provider we can use is BT (NTL have no plans to lay any cables for the next 4/5 years).

I have never used BT before and compared to NTL they seem quite expensive.

I don't use the phone very much for calls but need it to connect to the internet. I want to be able to use the internet anytime of the day and pay just one price for unlimited use. Broadband would be nice too but it seems to be twice the price NTL charge!?

Which package do people have?? What is the best deal??

Any help would be great.

Make sure you are comparing like with like.

NTL is £15 per month but the connection is something like 128Kbps. NTL's 576kbps (576 ish) is £24.99 per month.
BT broadband only offer 576kbps for home use & it is £29.99 so in reality BT is not that much more expensive. I suppose you have to consider line rental though, I don't know if NTL do that? If so, ignore what I have just said!
NTL now also offer 1MBbps for about £35 a month, I think so anyway.
I have BT Broadband & have had it for well over a year, had a few problems at first but it has been fine for the last year (apart from all of yesterday & this morning).
As for what is the best deal, it depends on how often you want to use the internet, if you use it alot I would definately go with broadband. Still, it then depends on what you do on the internet I suppose

I use BTAnytime which is £15.99 a month - they did restrict us to 12 hours in 24 hours use and I thought that may cause problems for me but in fact, as long as I remember to disconnect whenever I am not in front of the computer, it has worked out fine.
AOL offer a very similar package.

I have freeserve anytime, £12.99 a month, never been thrown off for staying on for long periods of time, and its very quick to connect.

I use BT Connect and have Home Highway fitted because I needed to be able to use the phone, be online, and send faxes. Not always - but sometimes all at the same time. Home Highway gave me this facility. I also have an ISDN connection which is very fast.

I have recently had an email from BT telling me that I have 'broken' our contract because I have been online for longer than 12 hours at a time - they never told me they had changed the goalposts in July! However, like Shirley, I disconnect when I am not in front of my PC and it is working out fine.

I would like to go for Broadband but it would just cost me more to have it installed so I'll stick with the Home Highway.

You could also consider Blue Yonder-I have been with them since the beginning and the service unlike BT is superb.

We had ISDN installed at first-The BT home highway service but proved to be rather expensive just to have another phone line free,and you paid extra if you used both lines to connect at 128k

We had that taken out and had another phone line installed,been with Blue Yonder ever since.

The other non broadband packages that BT offer cut you off after 2 hours and give you crap about broken contracts and all that rubbish.

Do like many others have done and take your custom elsewhere,and where the tech help is not run by pre schoolers.

We also had BT business highway and had it disconnected when NTL brought out their broadband service. It costs £24.99 per month and I'm very pleased with it.

Go for broadband if you possible can. It'll completely transform your surfing experience. It's getting cheaper (some providers are less than £25 a month), it doesn't tie up your phone (saving the cost of an extra phone line) and once you've experienced the higher downlaod speeds you won't want to go back to using a modem.

We are desparate for Broadband, but in our area only 75 out of a required 750 have signed up. we will never get cable or the likes, so BT Anytime it is!!

Anyone else in Gloucestershire who hasn't bombarded BT please do so. We would be grateful for broadband, never mind the cable services we know nothing about!!

We are with AOL Broadband and although it is expensive - £34.99 per month, it is extremely good.

We have been with AOL ever since we got the internet and the customer service is exceptional, if you ever have any questions about the internet or your computer in general you can ring their FREEPHONE number or visit the keyword Techchat were you can chat 1-2-1 over the internet to an AOL staff. AOL also has many extra features like a really good browser system and parental controls. You can have as many e-mail address's as you like and you have a certain amount of websapce reserved. You are allowed top log on to the computer for as long as you like, whenever you like 24 hours a day 7 days a week and you are automatically logged on when you switch your computer on. AOL screenames are also extremely handy as you can personalsie each browser and give 1 aol screename per family member.

It is very very very quick and the overall set up and layout is excellent.

This is an update! Us BTAnytime customers have just received notification of a change in the terms & conditions that you may want to know about - they are introducing a monthly usage quota of 150 hours' internet access. This works out at an average of five hours a day, every day. ( What you don't use up in a month is carried over to your following month's allowance).

Shirley - you can only carry a maximum of 50 hours over but me thinks I would have used all mine in a month I think we're gonna bite the bullet and move over to Broadband.

Yes Sam - sorry I left that bit out! I was so stunned when I read that we will have less than half the time we are allowed now per day!
We are also going to change ......... I'm looking into it!
