Search is down and I was wondering about the Brown Derby...How is the food, ambiance, waitstaff etc.

We always tend to eat at 50's in MGM but I was looking at the Derby's menu and I want that grapefruit cake...looks YUMMY:D

Thanks for your input!

We have been to the Brown Derby for lunch several times and like it. It is a nice atmosphere, quiet and found the service and food to be very good. If we spend a good part of the day in MGM and are staying for Fantasmic, this is our sit down meal of the day. Sometimes you just don't need a loud place or entertainment while you are eating. (They do have a piano player). I would recommend it.

If you don't eat there and still want the grapefruit cake, they sell it next door at the Starring Rolls Bakery.

Honestly we felt a lack of pixie dust there, but i bet we'd like it alot better without the kids.

This restaurant is definetly a must for us. In fact we are planning on eating there for both lunch and dinner in October.

Food has always been wonderful, service attentive and the atmosphere of this restaurant is superb.

Hope you have a wonderful time!!!!

We've always found it overpriced and not a great value for the money. And have never thought the atmosphere was that exciting. Sorry. We're not that hard to please and this is one place that we would rather not return to. So many other favorites to visit again!

We really love the Brown Derby. The Cobb salad and grapefruit cake are outstanding and the other items we have tried have all been above average at a minimum.

We like the atmosphere (although we have never been with kids) and the service has always been quite good.

My routine has become the following:

The day I arrive, and get to the hotel, it is around 12:30 to 1 pm. I have a PS set at the Brown Derby for 3 pm (still lunch). I order the Cobb Salad, add chicken, have a creme brulee for dessert and a Bailey's and coffee to top it off.

I would say that the Brown Derby is one of my favorites.

They of course have many other wonderful dishes to offer. It is almost like sitting at Sardis in NY for lunch. Calm atmosphere.

If you like a dish, be sure and ask them if they have the recipe. They do have it for the Cobb Salad.

Just do it. :smooth:

We love to eat at Brown Derby. We have never had a bad meal here. On our trip last Dec. we had 4 in our party and we all enjoyed our meals. Make sure you save room for a piece of grapefruit cake for dessert.

Count us in with the folks that love BD. We have eaten at BD so many times I can't even count and we have never had a bad meal. We have had some servers (very few) who were not the usual Disney "upbeat" personality you come to expect but they still provided competent service, just not the most friendly service.
We love the Cobb salad, the mushroom appetizer, the filet, the tuna, the grouper, the creme brulee and the grapefruit cake--all excellent!

Love the lump crap cakes, then sesame seared tuna and grapefruit cake oh my I'm starved.:earsboy: :sunny:  :earsgirl:

Sorry...I had heard so much good stuff about the Brown Derby and was in the end a bit disappointing. We made this our first meal of our vacation so perhaps we were just too tired.

Later on we tried the Prime Time and really enjoyed ourselves. PB and J milkshake!!! YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!

I was a big fan of the Derby--before Fantasmic came along. Now it seems to have become little more than a feeding stop on the way to Fantasmic--with patrons and servers alike interested in seeing how quickly the meal can be finished before Fantasmic begins. In fact, we've seen folks there screaming for their check BEFORE the meal was even served!!
Should add that the Cobb salad and grapefruit cake are still available--so the food still seems to be excellent.

Well, thanks everyone. I think we'll skip it, and I will get the grapefruit cake at Starring Rolls!

I agree with Uncleromulus that the atmosphere at BD has changed with the inception of the Fantasmic dinner package and unfortunately not for the better. I miss the days when they had the piano player providing soft background music and people lingering over a good dinner. However we still love thier food and the restauarant as a whole so we have just altered our dining times for BD. We now have a late lunch or else a very late dinner, which by then all the hustle and bustle of the fantamic dinner package attendees is usually gone.

The food is good. I had the Cobb Salad and ate it all up! It was a solo trip and I had a chance to look around and take in the ambiance. Definitely missing a little pixie dust, but it's supposed to be a slightly 'upscale' experience and it is just that. The service is very good as well.

I absolutely love this restaurant. I always have the best cobb salad in the free world, and usually soup. I never have room for the cake. We have never had a bad meal here.

DeeP is right--the food is still fine, and by proper timing you can avoid that Fantasmic "rush"--.
