Broken Shoulder

I'm a single mom who fell and broke my shoulder in two places two and a half weeks ago in my home. I immediately drove myself to the emergency room where I found out that there isn't much they can do except put your arm in a sling. I thought by now it would start feeling better but it seems worse than ever.

I have learned a new way to get dressed (no side zip pants, put belt on pants before putting pants on, etc.), started eating soft foods that don't have to be cut up, learned how to sleep sitting up and many other things. Luckily I have a very helpful little boy who doesn't mind cutting up mommy's food when just three weeks ago I was cutting up his food. He was also such a sweetheart about understanding why I canceled our trip to New Orleans for spring break.

I am just thankful that it was my left shoulder (I'm right handed) and that so far the doctor doesn't want to do surgery.

Has anyone else ever broken their shoulder and know when it should stop hurting? Any tips or tricks? I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone! It's worse than recovering from my emergency appendectomy or a c-section!

I don't have any tricks but I hope you feel better. I broke my elbow on my dominate side in January. I didn't think it would ever get better. I guess it just improved daily.

I hope you can find some tricks and maybe it will help you with your every day life. It's kinda like a huge bump in the road.:grouphug:

Thanks everyone. It's mostly frustrating. I hate being in pain and tend to overdo it. That's probably why it's still hurting so much.

I also think it's really weird that I have seen three doctors and not one of them has actually looked at my arm. They only looked at the xrays.

You would think that they would look just to see if there was any swelling or something. :confused3

Take it easy and get as much rest as you can. I know it's no easy task with a child to take care of. ;)

I am sorry you hurt yourself and I hope you heal quickly. DH broke his shoulderblade and collarbone 5 weeks ago today and he is just getting to where he can really do things with that arm.

He has had a couple of follow up visits, but unless an injury like his is bad enough to do surgery, they just let it heal on its own.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Hope you feel better soon.

I want to suggest taking vitamin C because it helps heal broken bones. I would take 1500 mg when I have broken bones or had surgery. The last surgery I had the Dr. was surprised I healed so quickly.

Stay positive and think each day is a step closer to feeling better.
