With this week being Sping Break I tried to shop within our budget, as kids will be home wanting food all the time.....growing teenagers.

I shopped with plans of cooking meals. So basically spent budget with plans on using stove/oven.

Now, I will be needing to get the oven repaired but until them I am struggling on what to feed the kids. I really cannot go do more shopping for microwavable stuff....just not in budget.

Any ideas?

Has anyone cooked pasta in the microwave?

I had no kitchen for a while and my BBQ and crockpot really helped me out.

I never cooked pasta in a microwave, but I believe it can be done.

I just googled cooking pasta in a microwave and ehow.com gives step by step instruction.

Good luck!

i would use the grill and crockpot too. i remember someone posting a recipe for crockpot spaghetti a while back...maybe google it?

Thanks.

Unfortunately the grill is out of gas.....that too will have to wait.

I did see the ehow recipe for noodles in microwave. I am going to try that to make pasta for some and mac & cheese for the rest of the 5 kids.

I plan to use crockpot tomorrow with rice cooker. I have chicken tenderlions and am looking for a sweet & sour recipe or seasame chicken one.

Thanks again.

Do you have a toaster oven? Anything that you make in the oven can be done in the toaster oven. It's just on a smaller scale.

If it can be boiled, it can be done in the microwave.

If you have an electric skillet, use it for anything you would have made in a skillet on the stove top.

The crockpot can be used for anything that is cooked in a sauce or broth.

Go to allrecipes.com and use the search by ingredients to see what kind of recipes can be used to with what you have on hand.

No toaster oven.

But I did remember and forgot.....duh.....about the electric skillet. That could work.

So far I have made one batch of egg noodles in the microwave and you can't tell they were not boiled.....yay!!!! Either spaghetti sauce or alfredo sauce? kids can pick.

I am cooking the pasta/elbows for mac & cheese right now. That is my oldest and youngest fav....so they are taken care of.

Thanks again for all the ideas. I may end up borrowing a toaster oven. We'll see how soon the oven can be fixed. Luckily its not a big repair and dh & I can do it ourselvs....its just getting the right part.

If the sensor is out in the oven, why isn't the stove top working?

You can cook pasta in the microwave. It takes about the same amount of time as doing it on the stove.

What other small appliances do you have? If you have a crockpot, a griddle, a george forman grill, a gas grill, and electric skillet or a toaster oven, it is easy to make alternative foods.

I cook a lot with the above mentioned small appliances, sometimes I go days without using the stove/oven.

If you tell us which, if any of those you have, we can give you better suggestions.

The electric skillet can be your best friend. It's how I cooked through college. I even would boil water in it. What type of food do you have on hand? I probably have a decent amount of ideas in my arsenal.

you can use your electric skillet to also cook small batches of pasta, rice etc. Use the grill for meats, veggies, etc. Crockpot is also your friend--I've even wrapped potatoes in foil and place near top for baked potatoes.

Thanks for all the awesome ideas.

I was able to get gas for the grill.....so chicken tonight, burgers tomorrow, etc.

DH would not let me use the stove because when the oven was plugged in the broiler was running and overheating everything.
My BFF owns an appliance store and luckly she found a sensor in the exact same model as our oven...she is shipping it tomorrow.
She also explained that if DH took out the broiler element that I could use the stove top.

Y'all are quite inventive and I am so happy to have y'all as resourses!!

Anyone ever cook frozen pizza on a gas grill?

I've never done it, but I think if I wanted to try it, I'd defrost the pizza, heat up the grill (then turn it to low, or maybe medium). Put it on foil, put it in the grill and close the cover. Check it after a while to see how it's doing (I'd probably put the pizza on one side of the grill and turn the gas off on that side if I had the option to do so). I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I've done frozen pizzas on the grill. I just put them right on the grill and watch them. It's guess work, but it works great.

I cook almost everything on the grill when we get really hot weather. We don't have air conditioning here so I don't want to heat up the house.
