Broken LCD Screen Question

I was just in Disney a few weeks ago and brought my Nikon D3000 with me. I took the camera out of the case to use it one night and the LCD was all messed up. The LCD screen didn't break but it looks like some pressure may have been applied and the pixels on the LCD itself is all messed up.

So I am mainly wondering how I would go about repairing this? I would assume that it is not covered under warranty since it's not a defective item. I have looked locally and haven't been about to find a camera repair store and I am unsure how I feel about mailing it off to an on line repair shop. The camera is less then a year old and I would like it fixed but I don't think I would want to pay hundreds to repair it...

It still takes pictures but I would only be able to use it on automatic since I can't read half the screen.

Any ideas?

I see you live in NH, are you anywhere near here?

I found this listed as a Nikon Authorized Repair Station (NARS). I can't speak for their work only that it is on the NikonUSA website. The other option is to send it directly back to Nikon for repair. I know your pain, I just dropped off a Pentax camera and a vertical battery grip at my local authorized service center for repair today. Good luck.

Since it is under a year old, I would try calling Nikon. Maybe it would be covered. Its easy to send it to them. I've sent my camera and a lens out to them a few times (Melville, NY).

How were you carrying it?

I had it in a soft sided bag in my back pack... I was trying to protect it was getting wet or scratched, never even though it could break any other way.

I can can Nikon, I just figured it was my fault so it would be covered.

It sounds more heat related that pressure related. Heat expands liquid (LCD=Liquid Crystal Display), and too much can burst an LCD screen. It doesn't happen all the time, but it can. The first electronics were the gameboys. Parents or kids would leave a gameboy in the car in the middle of the day to come back to find the screen busted from the inside.

These days the screens are smaller, slimmer, and much easier to replace.

It could be heat related but it wasn't very hot out, well it was hot but not left in car hot. If you know what I mean? I can see the pressure mark on the screen and it has actually moved from the top left of the LCD down to the middle.
