Mods - my most humble apologies if this is in the wrong place . . .

My husband has just broken his collar bone and we are scheduled to go to Disney in 4 and 1/2 weeks - are we going to have to cancel our trip?

Just not sure what to do?!

Thanks for insight any of you might provide!

:confused3

I don't think your question is out of place here, but you may get more help from the DISabilities Board. It is set up to deal with quesions and discussions on temporary setbacks too! :goodvibes

Why don't you post there as well and see what you get from both boards?

I broke my collarbone a long time ago, and it was painful! You never realize how many muscles connect to your collarbone until you try and get yourself out of bed with a broken one.

What's his doc saying about his recovery time? Mine was 4 weeks, but I was 20 and so I had youth on my side.

I would ask my doctor.:confused3

I would ask my doctor.:confused3

Yes, but most likely in 4 weeks he will be feeling somewhat better. If you have a package, it won't matter much to wait. If a room only you have until 5 days prior. I think he will be fine, maybe a little sore, but able to walk etc. around WDW.

I would suggest going over to the disABILITIES Forum. And when there, a good place to start would be the disABILITIES FAQ, especially Posts #2 and #3 there. To get directly to the disABILITIES FAQs click on the link in my signature.

Definitely talk to your doctor as they can give you better advice than we can. I would take into consideration whether or not he likes the thrill rides. If he doesn't like them, then it's probably more certain that he'll be fine in time for your trip. But if riding the big rides makes the trip for him, he may not be allowed by his doctor or it might just hurt him too much, especially on something like RnRC where the restraint comes over your shoulders. If that's the case, depending on the doctor's recovery time and suggestions I might consider postponing it a few weeks. Hope he feels better!

Having broken my collar bone long ago I would guess that you do not have to CANCEL your trip as he will likely feel well enough to travel by then. That said, you MIGHT have to adjust your touring schedule slightly. He still might be sore after a certain amount of time vertical - so you might need an afternoon rest or not to stay until midnight. Also - I would say no bigger thrill rides would be appropriate in my opinion. I would suggest he bring a sling for that arm even if it is feeling a lot better as using it a lot more on vacation might be tempting and the sling will remind him to take it easy and remind those around him to try not to bump into it as much.

Is your husband the beast of burden in the family? I can imagine if my husband had a broken collar bone he would try to do too much in terms of carrying bags. He would lift and then find out he hurts later.

What does his doctor recommend? I would follow the qualified medical opinion regarding how much physical activity he'll be able to tolerate (e.g. walking, etc). and how long it will take the bone to heal....

My DD's recovery time back when she was 3 years old and broke hers was 4 weeks.

I'd ask his Doctor and see what he says. It takes longer to heal when you are older.

I broke mine a long time ago, and it was very painful. I don't think I would have wanted to be at Disney World a month afterwards. While not filled with thrill rides, I can see how many rides would jar that injury. Even Spaceship Earth when it goes backwards would put pressure on it.:scared:

Do check with your doctor, but I honestly think you should postopne the trip for a few months.

I've broken both of my collarbones(not at once...but two events)

After about a month he'll be feeling human, although he won't be able to lift much of anything. He'll also be real sensitive to sudden movement and jostling. There is a crossover point (at least for me) around 5 weeks when everything starts getting back to normal.

If it was me in his situation, I'd still want to go, but I'd know in the back of my head that moving through crowds would be a bear. Also, you're going to be the primary carrier of everything...Lots of work on a disney trip.

Oone question, was it a clean break or was it just cracked?

I am in exactly the same situation, what did you end up doing? I'm hoping all was well with slight modifications to your plans!

This is a very old post. You may want to start one of your own. More people will see it, and be able to respond.:)

Welcome to the Dis.

You posted to a 5 year old zombie thread. You could try posting your question about your injury on the disABILITIES forum.

Is it non surgical? If so he will feel pretty good by week 4, it should be mostly healed by then and even riding a ride with a belt or somehting over the shoulder shouldnt bother much. But they will probalby do a x-ray to determine how healed it is around week 3. No real need to cancel.

No surgery thankfully. The consultant he saw was not terribly sympathetic, which has put him in a negative place unfortunately. She said his next x-ray would be after 6 weeks (good old NHS). Thank you, I gather that it would be mostly healed but not strong.
