You guys are ALWAYS a great source of info.

My DD (age 9 1/2) and I are heading to NYC toward the end of August. I'm looking for musical suggestions.

We've done this before and have already seen 'The Lion King' and 'Beauty and the Beast'. Recently the 7th and 8th graders performed an Abba song at the May concert and she really liked it.

So, for those of you who have seen Mama Mia- how is the subject matter for a 9 1/2 year old? Did you take your kids and how did they like the show and what ages were they?

Thanks for the info!

We saw it several years ago in Boston, and I think a 9 1/2 year old would enjoy it, especially if she knows the classic ABBA songs. I can't remember any inappropriate language. There was some suggestive material, but definitely not obscene.

I hope you enjoy the show.

It's not obscene, but the story line is that the woman doesn't know which of three men is the father of her child. I'll take DD12 to see it (we are going to NYC next week and hope to get a half price ticket for it or Hairspray) but I don't think I would have taken her three years ago. Again, though, there's nothing really "dirty" about it.

I loved the show but thought they did a pretty poor job of a story line - it would have been much more fun to just see them sing the songs as a concert for me!!!

I had the same issue! We were given the tickets as a gift and I really thought nothing of it until we were actually at the show and my DD 8 started to ask me why the girl did not know which one of the 3 guys was her father. Yikes! I was not ready for this kind of talk in the middle of a Broadway show. I wish I could remember how I talked my way out of it, but I know I did come up with something very simple and brief and she never brought it up again.

The show is not racy at all and she loved it. The music is great and the performers were fabulous. I would say that you should go to see it, but maybe just figure out ahead of time what you would say to explain about the three possible fathers. Other than getting past the premise of the show, it is really not anything inappropriate for a 9 year old. Have fun!

It's a great show and while there was nothing obscene I do remember a lot of sexual innuendo. I really took note because a friend of mine was going to take her two small daughters to see it (like 5 and 7). It's quite possible though that it would go over your daughter's head. But if everyone's laughing she may ask you what's funny.

I took my DD when she was 8 and we both loved it! I really don't like Abba's music and I had contemplated giving my tickets away as we were season ticket holders to our area's Broadway Theater League.

When I got home, I told my DH that had he gone with me, he'd have wanted to rush to see it on Broadway because it was that good.

My DD loved the music, and had frankly never heard any of Abba's music before since we don't play it. She never mentioned the one of three fathers thing. She just enjoyed the dancing and the singing. It was her favorite show that I've taken her to see although Riverdance was a close second.

She always says that she wants to see the show again.

We have the soundtrack. DD8 and I plan to see it next fall. She asked about the dad thing and I just told her that the mom had three boyfrinds at the same time that she really liked - (made it clear one boyfriend at a time was really the way it should be - this is just a story)....and she was good with that! :sunny:

Enjoy it!!!!

GREAT feedback! I knew I could count on you guys! :thumbsup2

I think DD would love the singing and dancing too- not to mention it is a show I've been looking forward to seeing and haven't had the chance yet!

Thanks!

As others have stated I think the questionable aspects of it will go over her head and she will enjoy the singing and dancing in the show.

I just received these discount codes yesterday, while they are not for your dates, maybe someone else who mentioned they would like to go soon can use them:

what about Tarzan ? it is on Broadway already...

I think that's one of th best ones you can take her to! If she knows the words (we gre up listening to ABBA!) to the songs, no one really looks at you funny if you sing along quietly! I think it's an awesome show for that age group as it's a bit more interactive and it's a different approach to classic stage musicals. I think she'd give you the two big thumbs up.
