We are flying from Bristol this year, and although its not too far away, I still want to start my holiday the night before, can anyone recommend somewhere nice with secure parking?

Thanks Jules x

Isn't Bristol the airport that doesn't do direct flights to the US. I  think you fuel at Manchester, what a nightmare i'd much rather go direct

Is that for real, whiteboy? What a nightmare. We were investigating First Choice flights earlier in the week and wondering why the flights from Bristol were an hour longer than those from Gatwick (when, if anything, they should be shorter). Do they pick up pax in Manchester?

no Whiteboy, we will not be stopping at Manchester

I just read on another site that the runway at Bristol is insufficient to allow the First Choice flights to take off with a full tank of fuel. Continental (i.e. the only other operator flying to the US from Bristol) only goes as far as New York, so no problem there.

I'm really glad I found out about this. We've been seriously considering First Choice from Bristol for next May. I'd assumed this route was direct non-stop, but it looks as though it's only direct.

Any luck in finding a hotel, Jules?

Yes thanks Deb, we seem to have found a nice one thanks to your help, it is in Churchill too, so we will have to raise a glass to the Churchills in Chirchill !

We will be flying with Continental to New York and the New York to Orlando, its not ideal to have to change, but we feel that it suits us this year, I am relieved to have a year off from Virgin and we got a brilliant price

I'm flying with First Choice from Bristol in September and the plane definitely touches down in Manchester for fuel on the way out. Way back is direct.

It's only an extra hour on the way out and Bristol is such an easy airport to get in and out of so it was a no brainer for me!

We flew from Bristol with First Choice last year. Yes the runway is too short to take off with a full tank of fuel so it flies to Manchester. It simply stops to refuel and change the cabin crew. You don't get off the plane and you don't pick up extra passengers (or at least our flight didn't). On the way home the flight goes directly to Bristol.

It does add about an hour to the journey but was a very good flight and we would certainly do it again. It beats travelling back from Gatwick jetlagged to the west country on your return. We actually preferred our flight with FC over Virgin the previous year.

This would be a big bonus for us, but I'm not sure I could endure the outbound leg - an 11 hour flight, two take-offs, two landings and a 4.45pm arrival in Sanford. :scratchin

Are you staying at the Holiday Inn near the airport?

Ditto here - we flew FC last year and have booked with them again for this October :thumbsup2

Of course we'd rather avoid the extra touch-down in Manchester (nothing against Manchester, per se! ;) ) but it's a minor niggle weighed against other, more persuasive, plusses:
  • The main reason - a more local airport (avoiding Gatwick!)
  • Great seats and legroom in economy
  • We were able to upgrade our economy entertainment system (£5 pp) to the on-demand system provided to Premium passengers
  • The best in-flight meal I've had - now, I don't get on a plane with the expectation of a great dining experience; for me it's just something that comes as part of the flight. However, my veggie FC meal last year was memorable for being really good!

Other negatives (as well as the Manchester fuelling stop):
  • No pre-requested seating, and you have to pay extra if you want to gaurantee seating together
  • Drinks and snacks have to be paid for
  • Charter timetable with one midweek flight (at the moment) during the summer only

Last year, we got a great price for our FC flights, too. This year's prices aren't such a good deal - but we still reckon we're just about ahead when we factor in the extra fuel / transport / accommodation costs for a Gatwick run, and it's less hassle for us getting there and back.

In fact, even if Virgin or BA flew direct from Bristol and were the same price as FC, I'd still opt for First Choice because their seating is so much better!!

Hi, no we are staying at the Winston Manor, it looks good, and after speaking to them on the phone very friendly, the reports on Trip Advisor are good, Ian was swayed by one which says that the lady owner is sassy :lmao:

Hmm, Hil - you do proffer a very persuasive argument...

Confused of Gloucester.

im flying from bristol on 28th may, not that keen on the manchester stop but we are going premium so should not be that bad, like someome else said it will be nice to get a taxi home when we land back at bristol as 2 years ago i had to stop at reading services to shut my eyes for an hour as we had landed at gatwick at about 6am and i cant sleep on planes, so this time it will be safer plus i can have a drink on the way home.

Hi there,
We're flying from Bristol with FC this year the reason being;

A) We could stay on resort for 3 weeks from Bristol £1400 CHEAPER than the same holiday going for 2 weeks from Heathrow....no brainer for us!!!!

B) We live 40 minutes away.

C) We used FC for the first time last year (Flying from LHR) and thought it was so much better than the flights we'd had to Orlando with Virgin and BA....More attentive staff/more leg room/newer planes etc..that was our experience anyway!

Therefore I wouldn't automatically dismiss flying from Bristol just because of a short stop to re-fuel....worth saving £1400 and getting an extra week don't you think?!!!

thats a great saving, we would definately consider the FC option, it wasn't good for us this year, as we are going back for Christmas, am I right in thinking that the flights stop in October?

Not even sure that they fly from Bristol in October Jules, I have a feeling it is a Summer only flight, albeit I'm not too sure when Summer finishes?
