Bringing The Magic Home - 8/20/05

That's great you have the cruise tips almost covered! I've been selling off things too - our cedar play structure in the backyard, old aquariums etc - every little bit helps!
Also noticed you are in Portland. We drove through there this spring on our way to San Francisco. It was one of my favorite stops on the whole trip! I'd love to go back. Actually my husband is on his way to Portland today for business. I think they are going sturgeon fishing? Does that sound right?
Diane

Sounds right! Charter fishing is a big industry here. We LOVE Portland too! DH and I moved here in 1991. DD was born here. I can't imagine living anywhere else! :cloud9:

Parents got their new room number 2046. They were 2639 but decided they needed a window. They went to GTY status and they are now 2046. We are getting closer to cruise time :hourglass

Those with teens going on board... Will you give your kids a maximum amount to spend on the cruise. I know that they either have spending privedges or no privledges. What will you do? We were considering giving the boys an amount to spend per day and then every so often we'd go to Guest Services to make sure they are following the guidelines we set up for them.

I guess the only thing they could spend money on is drinks (virigin mixed) or the arcade. The arcade is what concerns me!

just buy the boys a arcade card it has a set amount on it and tell them free drinks up on deck 9 their isent to much that they would need to buy so tell then no more then 5.00 a day on snacks for the movies sandra

Sandy: How many more pounds till you reach goal? I have 6 more pounds. I don't expect to reach it by trip time. I just hope I don't gain it back on the cruise!

Diane: I know what you mean about being sick. I was sick for 3 weeks. I still have a cough once in a while and the pain from the pleurisy, which is improving.

On our last cruise, I gave my teen a set amount that she could spend. She asked that if she didn't spend it on board, could she have it in cash when we got home or could it roll over to the repo cruise (since we were already booked.) I said ok to that.

She spent just about half of what I'd allowed. Amazing how those smoothies are less inviting when it was HER money she was spending. Yup, she went to the drink station on deck 9. In fact, it became a joke in THe Stack that they all made coke runs together.

Mine has no interest in the arcade, but the gift shops look awfully attractive to her.

Prior to age 13, I'd just cancel her charging. At 13, she was a very responsible kid, and I decided that I'd just have to trust her. She showed that she was worthy of the trust.

If your concern is the arcade, cancel the charging and buy them an arcade card with your KTTW. Remember that they can get drinks in The Stack...they may want one occasionally.

Okay another silly teen question...

My oldest is getting ready to have his braces put on. I didn't think about our cruise. Do you think I should wait until we get back? Any of you with teens think this is a problem? I guess the only thing I see is some delicious sticky, hard, chewey dessert he will want to eat and then cant!

Both of my kids have braces and will for the cruise. Braces are so different today from when I had them as a kid. Neither of my kids have ever had any problems and the only food they really avoid at all time are sticky chewy items like carmels. Everything else they tell us to avoid (like soda, popcorn, tortilla chips) they also say is okay every now and then.

As far as braces, as long as they are not adjusted the day or 2 before, it should be fine. That is when they really hurt, not anything that tylenol can't fix, but it can be uncomfortable. Make sure he brushes after he eats cos things tend to get caught under the wire. You can get little brushes that look like teeny bottle brushes that work great for getting under that wire. Caramels and braces do mot mix well, but everything else should be fine. Good luck mom! My DS and I had ours on at the same time, made those appointment times a lot easier!

Deb: I'm worried about the arcade too. Last cruise the boys didn't even know there was an arcade on board so I was OK! LOL Sandra's idea about buying them an arcade card sounds good. They're only 8 and 10 so I won't really be letting them out around the ship without us anyway.
The smoothies were a problem last time though. 14 days of smoothies could add up!

Yay for Mark!!!!! I guess the secretary will get fired now?

It will be so much easier at the pool. Everyone can mingle as they like, come and go as they please. It might be crowded, but it will be fun.

Being a Dental Hygienist and having had braces twice I would wait until you get back. It is not only the foods that mights need to be bi-passed, but some kids get canker sores, loose or pokey wires, etc. etc. Since he does not already have braces it will take some getting used to. Brushing, flossing and lots of food that needs to be cleaned out. In the skeem of things I don't think waiting another month to get the braces on is a big deal. Did you ask him what he wanted?

Having braces experiences on my twin daughters, I vote for holding off the braces until you get back. I remember the pain in the beginning.

Okay, again I admit I don't keep up...was the latest Mark and Sandra post a Dismeet post...if so we're there, 3 people. I admit, it finally hit me last night, I do not have enough clothes !!! My job requires virtually nothing I'd wear on a cruise....my uniform is a $12 blouse, blue jeans or capris, a $20 bag, and during the summer $8 slides (bought 3 years ago), and during the winter $85 boots that are two years old. I have 4 dresses in my closet, and one pair of nice black slacks. My capris are outdated, will have to buy new. My DH hates my slides so will have to replace those too...my dentist thought they were cute, don't understand why DH has to be difficult...and don't think my $4 XXL white T-shirts I wear for bed are going to make it for cover-ups and sleepwear. Like it isn't enough that I've ordered books and gotten the passports taken care of ??? I have a sense I'm too late to order door plates, name tags, or T-shirts...can we just be recognized as the tall loser family ? How did this creep up on me ? Is my family going to be the bridge between Disers and non-disers ? How humiliating...I booked w/in the first hour, and am this far behind !!!

We'll catch you up!

*Yes, Disney apparently couldn't/wouldn't give us a room, so we're at the pool!

*Contact Renee (piglet33) to see if she can still make you name tags! Come up and introduce yourself to any fool and you won't be a stranger any more!

*links to the T-shirts are in the newsletters! I need to do that too...I like the ones with the pin logo, but haven't gotten one yet.

*It's a good time to shop, they're getting ready to close out all the summer stuff, and you can get it cheap! Make a list, stick to it, and get the most important stuff first. I'm planning on bringing 7 shorts/shirts outfits, 4 casual dinner pants/capris/skirts, and formal/semi-formal wear. I will have to wash, but I guess I would have to do that anyway. I don't have 14 days worth of summer clothes, and it wouldn't all fit in the suitcase anyway!

*Smile, it's the trip of a lifetime!

Wide awake: that was such a great post! It's just how I feel! DenverVal was right - there are lots of great sales on now. Only problem is I get home and nothing matches
Denine: a friend of ours had pleursy this winter - it was really awful for her. I hope you are feeling better.
Diane

You've got plenty of time to get the T-Shirts etc. ready for the cruise.

Benita & I wore our Pin Shirts to the meet in Allentown. Everyone at the meet loved them. Also - got Mel in trouble with them - her DH Bob - immediately said he wanted the shirts too!

We also wore our lanyards -- nametags from Renee and our SOF hats. Trust me the Allentown Disney fans knew the SOF were in the house. Plus two of hour tables won door prizes (out of 3 given), and James won the first round of trivia.... and two of us won roundtrip Limo rides to WDW when we go next time!!!! Plus other trivia prizes were won by us fools. :cool1:

Okay, I'm going to cancell his appointment for his 7/26th appointment. My kids still don't know we're going, but they think we are going to the beaches in L.A. When I asked him what he would rather do he said to wait. Thanks for the great advice!

I guess I'm in denial about going. Haven't packed or put aside anything yet. I did get the Sport Sunscreen everyone was talking about at Costco. Maybe once I get my room it will seem real and I need to get on the ball!

Deb

Mark - I thought I was on the list for the dismeet but dont see my name.... please add my party of 4

Thanks
