My mom is planning to make a special cake for dd's birthday and bring it to Chef Mickey. I just had a panicky thought. Please tell me you are allowed to bring in outside cakes!:scared1:

I would call CM's and speak to a manger about it now because there was a thread a few months back about an outside cake trying to come in at CM's and it was not a favorable outcome. I forget all of the details but it was quite an ordeal and upsetting to the family.

From the thread the pp mentioned it sounds like as long as you don't expect the staff at CM to handle the cake in any way you'll be fine. In other words, as long as you don't want them to store the cake in the back, cut and serve the cake, or for that matter even bring you plates and silverware you should do ok.

They would probably say no, outside food or drinks in any restaurant is frowned upon and there will be signs to that effect.

As a PP noted I would definitely call first. At most restaurants here they do not allow outside food to come in unless it is from a certified bakery. I think it is mostly to protect them but you would rather be safe than sorry. :)

According to that thread that a previous poster remembered, you may be able to bring the cake in. However, they will not hold it in the kitchen for you, you'll have to keep it at the table. They will also not provide utensils for cutting the cake or plates, you'd have to get those from the buffet.

The poster on the previous thread was upset because while they were permitted to bring in the cake, they expected it to be a surprise for the birthday child, which couldn't happen because Chef Mickey's wouldn't keep the cake in the kitchen and bring it out for presentation, nor would they provide candles, cutting equipment and plates, or serve the cake.

Call the restaurant DIRECTLY (not through WDW-DINE) and ask before you try to do this, though. Make sure they understand that you would not expect them to hold the cake in the kitchen area or have restaurant personnel handle the cake, it's certain they can't do that.

Call first to see if it's okay. Then remember what the PPs also mentioned about keeping the cake at the table and getting your own serving and eating plates and utensils. I remember that thread... not pretty. Have a great trip!

Thanks for the info. I do not need them to hold it or handle it for us. I plan to have it on the table during the meal and can even bring paper plates and plastic forks if nevessary. I just want my mom to be able to bring the special cake. Worst case scenario, she could keep it in the cooler in her car and we could eat in in the lobby of the CR or on the beach at the Poly where we are headed afterwards to watch firewroks.

1) This sounds like the best solution.
2) A win-win for everyone.
3) Plus, a great way to take a break from the action.
4) After gorging yourself at a buffet, there is not room for cake.

Good point about the gorging!! I would say we could just enjoy it when we get back to the room since we are staying in a 2br villa at OKW but we have 2 sets of grandparents coming from other parts of FL for dinner and would rather just stay near MK and watch fireworks from the Poly. Who knows, we may just wing it. Dinner ressies are at 5:25 and fireworks are at 9 so we have a bit of extra time too. Thanks for all the info.

A 2 bedroom at OKW has tons of room and is a great place for a party - just invite all the grandparents back to the villa after the fireworks for some cake.

There will be 12 of us total. Do you think we will be really cramped in the villa? I'd love for them to come back for a glass of wine and some relaxing since it will be the only time we will see them until Christmas.

I've been to a party in the OKW two bedroom with three times that many people. Yes it's a little cramped with that many, but for 12 it will be fine.

definitely call and check with the particular restaurant 's management, but in our experience at Cinderella's Royal Table...

... we were not only allowed to bring the cake in, the staff did hold it in their kitchen fridge and provided plates, serving knife, etc. Maybe we were just lucky.
:confused3

1) Yep, really lucky.
2) Against the rules to bring non-WDW-food into the kitchen.
. . . unknown ingredients
. . . unknown germs/microbs
. . . unknown previous handling
3) All sort of contamination could occur

If I remember correctly, the poster who had the long thread about the cake at Chef Mickey's had actually purchased the cake from the Boardwalk Bakery intending to save a little money on having a custom cake delivered to the restaurant, so it was WDW food - but because they carried it in themselves, Chef Mickey's wouldn't allow it in the kitchen. That was part of the reason the poster was so frustrated, that and the restaurant wouldn't provide a serving plate and they had to serve the cake from a cardboard box.

I find it kind of surprising that a restaurant would bring food that was carried in by a guest into the kitchen area at all and wouldn't count on that happening now.
