Can we bring sandwiches/food off the boat when we get to PC? I was thinking of getting a couple of sandwiches from the ship to start our long drive back to MI.

No - not allowed for health reasons.

All travelers entering the United States are required to DECLARE any meats, fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, animals, and plant and animal products (including soup or soup products) they may be carrying. The declaration must cover all items carried in checked baggage, carry-on luggage, or in a vehicle.

Upon examination of plants, animal products, and associated items, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agriculture specialists at the ports of entry will determine if these items meet the entry requirements of the United States.

Avoid Fines and Delays
Prohibited items that are not declared by passengers are confiscated and disposed of by CBP agriculture specialists. But that’s not all. Civil penalties may be assessed for violations and may range up to $1,000 for a first-time offense. Depending on whether the confiscated, undeclared items are intentionally concealed, or determined to be for commercial use, civil penalties may be assessed as high as $50,000 for individuals. The same fines apply to prohibited agricultural products sent through the international mail.

You can bring back all the unopened processed food that you wish....or any items not covered by the above list. Um...yeah, we brought back some big island cookies.

I did get stopped once because I had a lemon wedge in my tea. No fine or anything; just had to throw it away. Actually it was a DCL CM who stopped and reminded me that it wouldn't be allowed.

Well, I was hoping to bring packaged snacks for the flight, like goldfish or graham crackers.

I'd like to understand this better...... I plan to take with me individual packed goldfish, cookies, and things similar for both our LONG flight there and back. So, I plan to take what ever is not eaten on the flight there, with me for the flight home. This is ok or not? Seems crazy that this would not be ok....

Yes, this is totally OK. The items you have mentioned are PROCESSED foods, and are not fresh fruit or animal products.

What you cannot do--take an apple from the breakfast buffet and bring it back (USDA rules to protect the US from insects and bacteria that may be carried in some fruits from other places). The regulations are posted above and specifically refer to unprocessed products. Processed, sealed containers are FINE.:goodvibes

Meat - processed or not - is not allowed. Nor is any fresh fruit or vegetable.

My mother got stopped for carrying an apple when getting off DCL. She did not know she still had it in her carryon (from the flight down) and all she had to do was hand it over. No penalty.

Though I have not brought in food from a DCL cruise, on other travels I have brought into the U.S. jams, breads, cookies, candy, cake, etc. Even cheese generally is OK. When I do bring in food, I declare it on the customs form and have it ready to show to the agent. It has always been given the OK.
