Bringing fishing gear

Hey all,

I started researching fishing opportunities and was wanting to bring some of my own gear but it looks like DCL prohibits it (along with a ton of other things a lot of people would probably consider bringing, including over the door hangers now). Has DCL recently clamped down on what you're allowed to bring on?!

For fishing gear, I would be bringing travel rods that I could probably pack into my suitcase (hopefully) as well as reels and tackle - if they put stuff through the X-Ray machine and see the reel and hooks, I'm wondering if they'll flag it and make me ditch it.

Has anyone had recent experiences bringing any of their own gear onboard?

EDIT: just to clarify, I'm not planning to fish to keep and eat. This is purely recreational and catch and release at one of the ports of call where I've researched and know that fishing isn't restricted - St Thomas.

Most of the stuff has been prohibited for a while now. Prohibition of fishing gear seems pretty reasonable. Imagine someone trying to fish off a balcony or Decks 4 or 10? Huge potential for issues. In addition, imagine someone leaves the room and misses a fish hook. Now imagine the next party comes in and encounters the fish hook. No thanks.

Yes, they X Ray the bags. The point of which is to find stuff that's not supposed to be brought onboard. Whether your travel rods and equipment will make it through the screening, no one here knows. The screeners may be forgiving that day. Or not.

I don't know that it's worth the chance.

Generally, any items confiscated before boarding will be held until you return at the port. Then you can pick it up again.

As noted, the over the door organizers have been banned for a long time now (2013).

RE: the over the door hangers. I think our last cruise was in 2012 or 13 so that makes sense that I wouldn't have known about it until now LOL

EDIT: we actually went in 2014 and I found an old email thread about the door hangers - totally forgot hahaha!! I think the workaround for this is to use the magnets with the hangers and then hang a shoe rack thing on that so it'll still be on the door :)

Yea, prob not worth it for the rods. I was hoping just to bring some lighter gear for St Thomas as there are some spots I was wanting to check out on the island.... guess that's probably not gonna happen.

If not, I guess my fallback is to just go out with a charter, which I've been hearing pretty good things about overall around that area.

Actually the work around that most have done is to use the hooks in the room and hang it from those. Or on one of the hangers in the closet.

You mean like the coat hanger type hooks? Where are those typically located? I like the idea of having those shoe organizers on the door but I guess it doesn't really matter where it is

There are hooks (well, really knobs) on the wall, usually along the wall across from the foot of the bed.

As well as on the wall in the bathroom:

I can just see the complaints now. "I got a good strike while fishing next to the shuffleboard layout, and when I asked a CM to contact the bridge and ask the Captain to turn around for another cast they wouldn't do it. How dare they make me miss a great catch!?!"

Haha, I think I've seen a youtube vid or two of people fishing off their balcony on a cruise ship... :O

That said, there are cruise lines (like Carnival, RC, etc) that do not prohibit guests from bringing fishing gear on with the obvious exception that the fishing gear only be used in ports of call and not on the ship. So I suppose the decision on whether to fully ban or allow with exemptions is perhaps based on the level of risk they want to accept for liability that some idiot would actually try to fish over the side and injure someone else or cause other issues, etc. Of course, if we're going to talk about liability and injuring others, an idiot with golf clubs (which are in fact allowed on DCL but prohibited from being taken outside of the stateroom) could go hitting golf balls off the side of his/her balcony or worse a public area on the deck and it would be the same dilemma IMHO.

You may laugh, but I remember a sailor fishing off the stern of a guided missile cruiser in the Red Sea. He caught all kinds of fish. We had fresh Red Snapper that night. Yum.
I can neither confirm or deny that when a submarine opens their outer torpedo tube doors while going through a school of shrimp that you can have fresh shrimp in the tube after you shut the outer door and drain the tube. :)
