Bring your own stroller or rent?

What should we do for our three year old? Should we bring our own stroller or rent one at DL (free with our Disney card, but have to wait in line). Ours would be helpful for walks to and from the park and at Downtown Disney. What do you think? Our trip is coming up  so we need to figure this out.

We took our first trip last fall, and I debated whether to take one or both of our strollers, or rent. I knew that DS2 would spend much of the time in one, and I didn't think DS6 would need one unless he was really tired in the evening. I'd also read a few reports of strollers being stolen, but there didn't seem to be a pattern of expensive strollers v. cheap strollers, so I don't think someone was targeting the expensive ones. Most people reported that their strollers went untouched (other than the CMs rearranging them to keep walkways clear.)

I finally decided that, between the two kids, we'd really need one for the nightly walk back to the hotel. I brought the more expensive stroller we own, because it's much easier to maneuver, especially one-handed. I figured we could rent a 2nd if necessary, or carry DS2 while DS6 rode.

As it turned out, DS6 hopped into the stroller whenever DS2 got out, even in the morning. I think this helped save up his energy, because we wound up not ever needing a 2nd stroller. On evenings when DS6 rode back to the hotel, DS2 either walked or was carried on DH's shoulders.

Yes, there will be a line to get the stroller, but you will be able to by-pass the line you'll have to wait in if you bring your own stroller on the tram-both ways. If you arrive at park opening, or leaving at one of the parks closings, the line can be very long. Only the first and last cars of the tram allow unfolded strollers on them. I would get the free one from Disney, and pick-up one, or two, of those clip on drink holders. While the Disney strollers have a good amount of storage, there isn't a great place to hold your drinks. :confused3

I also find the Disney stroller easier to manuever than mine. 3 wheels, versus 4. :woohoo:

HTH. Have a great time!

We won't need the trams because we are staying close by and walking-which is part of why I am considering taking my own stroller. But our umbrella lilke strollers sit too low for my husband to push, so we'd have to take our nice Graco stroller that goes with our travel system, and with another baby on the way I don't want it to get stolen.

If we decide to rent and bypass the strollers at the beginning of the day to get to Nemo quicker, can you rent a stroller with the Visa card thing at Tomorrowland?

No, the only place to rent is just inside the entrances of DL and DCA. A few times over the last year, they have closed those stroller rental areas and had only one rental location, located just outside DL main entrance, to the right. (By the kennels) I don't know if they'll be doing that again, this year. :confused3

The good news is once you do pick up a stroller (either at DL, or DCA) you can take it to the other park, you don't have to wait again. If you leave the park's area, however, and go to DTD, you will have to leave the stroller there, where, hopefully, it'll be waiting upon your return, if not you'll have to take your receipt to get another one.

If I wasn't taking the trams, I'm not sure what I would do, bring my own, or get one for free? My stroller isn't very expensive and it wouldn't be a great lose if stolen. Though, I've never had a problem at either DLR, or WDW, when it comes to strollers (either my own, or Disney's) with the exception of having the CMs move them around. I do know of people, however, who will take a Disney stroller, and use it, if there is nothing left in it. I personally have never had someone take mine, but it's never left empty either. There's always something in it. (blanket, bags, towels, etc.)

When I usually go, it isn't first thing in the a.m. so the rental line is non-existent. And yes, while my DD is 7, she is still small enough (48#, 46") that she can ride in the stroller when tired. Also, I just can't break myself of having someplace to hold our bags, cameras, etc. If we are only going for a few hours (I know, everyone hates DLR APHs!) then we don't use a stroller.

If the rental line is the biggest issue, while one of you is renting the stroller, the other one can take the kids around that immeadiate area for a few photos, including going into the Town Square area (around the flagpole) where there are almost always characters, for pictures, and autographs. Depending on the characters line length, you may still be in the same line when your stroller shows up.

we have never found the stroller lines to be too outrageous...maybe it is just the time of when we get to the park or the time of year we are visiting.

for space in our vehicle, we just brought a cheap old umbrella stroller strictly for the walks to and from the park. once we got to the park, we got our "free" stroller rental and parked our cheap one somewhere in the park (usually either by train station or in fantasyland). we used the nicer disney stroller during the day and when it was time to go home, we would pick up ours which was always where we had left it.

note, we did bring a really cheap on for this, so that in the event it wasn't there when we went back, we wouldn't feel like we "lost" anything.

We brought our umbrella strollers, one for each child (yes, even though DS is 6)...for the walk to and from the hotel. Once at DL stroller rental, we checked in the umbrellas (they keep it safe for you and give you a claim check). Then we used the Disney Visa to get our two free strollers for the day. The lines were never more than 5 minutes or so (we were there at opening, except for our EE day, when we were there for EE), and the nice rental strollers are AWESOME. They have your name on them, the handle is nice and high and they are INCREDIBLY easy to maneuver.

This process was one of the best parts of our DL stay (May 8-12 of this year).

Good luck!

I didn't know they would claim check your own. :goodvibes That's great. And I completely agree-they are really easy to steer! Now that my DD is a little bigger, her stroller is hard to steer unless she sits all the way back, that's not the case with the Disney one though.

Maybe we're leaning towards renting one for free now. We'll also have to rent one at Seaworld, but that's no big deal.

Will your dh be willing to carry your 3 year old back to the hotel each time? If so, then I'd say rent. We brought our own stroller for walking to/from the HoJo until our youngest was 4. Then we started renting one. However, we still wish we had stroller for that long trip back with three very heavy, slow moving, whiney children.

Also consider the fact that your stroller helps carry your "stuff" to and from the parks (extra jackets, snacks, water bottles, blankets, etc.). It can be a real asset when you are walking to/from your hotel.

Do the Disney strollers have a spot for "stuff"? Our diaper bag is a backpack, so that's not a huge issue, and my dh is willing to carry our son to and from (mostly from since he'll be tired). We are flying and have to bring the car seat, so one less thing to haul with us might be nice....

Does anyone have a picture of the disney strollers?

If you can get the strollers for free, do it. It's so worth it.

They do have a basket underneath, and a small pouch on the back. They handle really well, and if your stroller gets lost, there are several places around DL and DCA that you can go and get a new one (just hang onto the receipt that they give you, and a CM will get you a replacement stroller).

FWIW, I've been taking my strollers to DL nearly weekly for almost three years, and I've never had one stolen or anything taken from them. And a lot of times, we will park our stroller in one spot for hours while we use the train to get around the park.

Trying to give you a link to a picture of mine, hope it works.

back view of stroller from September of '05.

I personally don't find them easy to navigate, but then, I'm anti-stroller to begin with, and hate that it becomes a necessity to use them. And my In Step jogger (I bought it AFTER our first Disney trip) is MUCH easier to steer. :)

With the disney visa stroller rentals are free? you don't have to earn them as a reward? I just got my disney visa and haven't really used with yet, but I will be going on june 18-20. will the free stroller deal still apply to new members?

Yes, as a Disney Visa card holder, you get two free stroller rentals per day at DL or DCA. You need to rent them at the park entrances, and show your Disney Visa and picture ID (whose name has to match the name on the card).

FYI - If you rent with Hertz through AAA you get one free, car seat or booster seat. One less thing to carry.

I think we've decided (at least for today) that we are going to rent a stroller there. I can carry the backpack and anything we buy back to the hotel and my dh can carry our three year old. If that proves to be too much on our first day we'll go get a cheap umbrella stroller for the rest of our trip.
