Norwegian Cruise Line dining room dress code enforcement.

As someone going on their fourth NCL cruise soon, I'm all for it, but I can tell you that NCL guests are generally up in arms right now. NCL differentiated itself years ago from other cruise lines by having any time dining and no dress codes. So it's not really in line with their brand.

I saw that in a couple of articles.

Well, I would generally comply with their new code since even my most casual clothes would be appropriate. Plus it does seem like it’s primarily their special restaurants that are included. Really, it’s not all that strict since jeans are still acceptable. It could have been much worse.

However, since the casual aspect of their dining has been a big part of their brand for so long, I hope the announcement was made with enough notice for people to cancel without a huge penalty. It feels a bit like a bait and switch if you booked expecting one thing and now it’s something else (although I am sure they have it covered in the T&C). I do feel bad for people who wanted a 100% casual experience and are no longer getting it.

In essence… they fixed what wasn’t broke.

They are not saying you have to wear tails and gowns or even suits and dresses. They are just asking for something a notch up from "street hobo". I'm all for it!
If it's enforced....Saw a similar policy on Celebrity for the regular dining rooms and people still came in with shorts and men wearing ball caps.

I agree. I don't think wearing long pants and shoes to go to a speciality restaurant is too much to ask. It sounds similar to the Palo dress code.

Isn’t this just for the premium extra pay restaurants?
Also main dining rooms according to the article.
"Norwegian Cruise Line has updated its dress code to clarify what guests can wear in its main dining rooms and specialty dinner restaurants, including Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro, Onda by Scarpetta. Palomar and The Haven Restaurant, according to AL.com."\

That seems dumb to me when they market themselves as freestyle cruising. I wear a hat all the time when I cruise on Disney because I lost part of my hair from cancer radiation treatment. I even bring a dressy hat for formal night. I don’t see how what other people are wearing matters to your own dining experience.

Well Elliott Management bought stake recently in NCL with expectations of "turning it around" so I would expect more changes. The article I read was actually about how Regent passengers should start getting concerned.

If anyone doesn't know who Elliot Management is they are the private activist fund that changed SWA with all their changes...and promptly as expected sold off like half their stake just before the new assigned seating was about to go into effect. The activist fund has a habit of doing terrible things to companies they get involved with and are only in it to take over in a hostile way, force changes, makes some money and leave while the pieces normally fall to the ground.

I haven't read anywhere that this applies to the main dining room. I'm going on a NCL cruise this Summer and I'm not concerned about it. It's seems like an over reaction. I doubt many people show up at speciality restaurants wearing tank tops and flip flops to begin with.
I sailed on the Royal party ship Utopia last month. We ate at speciality restaurants every night and people were dressed decently. I don't even think Royal has a dress code.

I've only been on one NCL cruise, but just about everyone in all of the specialty restaurants that I visited was dressed casually. There were shorts a tank tops everywhere.
