bridge to terabithia

Have you read the book? It's not appropriate for young children, it's a very emotional and sad book. Reviews that I read this morning are saying that the movie IS closer to the book then the trailer leads you to believe (book spends little time inside the fantasy world of Terebithia while the trailer looks like it's all about that and people have been disappointed that it's not like that).

The reviews I read this morning were also saying to not bring children under 10. I am taking a group of children on Sunday and we limited the book and movie club to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.

It's heavy content.

I love Bridge to Terabithia! I read the book in the third grade and fell in love.(I still have the original book--the school librarian gave it to me because I took it out every single week)
Katherine Paterson is a great writer and when I seen they were doing a movie I was all excited but then I seen the trailers...and I was disappointed because what they show in the trailers wasn't really the book.

The book is about an unlikely friendship that blossoms and ends in tragedy. I have not seen the movie but honestly don't believe a little one would understand the story being told--the "monsters"(actually characters from the book who were not monsters) may be frightening for a little one to look at

Since the trailer deviates from the book so much in its character portrayals I am unsure as to what the actual movie contains--I think if you let your little one watch the trailers and they show fear then I wouldn't bring them to the movie theater

I also love this book, but think the trailers don't look anything like what I've read. I'll be curious to see what people who love the book think of the movie.

The movie is rated PG because a major character in the film dies. You should make the judgement on this one. In my opinion though, it is not good for a child that young to see it.

My DS11 is reading this as part of 5th grade curriculum (and can't see the movie until they finish the book!)....my DD9 is 3rd grade and wants to see the movie- so I made her read the book. She finished it last night- in tears. She is okay with the plot, but it really brought home the loss of her best friend who moved away last summer. It is a great "conversation" starter- on a very difficult topic. We had major tears for quite a while....I wouldn't recommend it for a 4 year old unless you want to talk about death and loss and friendship.

BUT- for an older child (maybe age 9 or 10 and up)- it is a wonderful story, and Mom's Movie reviews on Yahoo gives it a B+.

I took my DD 10 and DS 5. DS was bored silly, and wanted to go to the lobby playing video games. This is not a movie for a 4 year old.
