My friends daughter is getting married. She has overcome many obstacles in her life (she has CP) and to see her marry is so special. I am looking for a special gift for the bridal shower. I've known her since she was a little girl so she's got a special place in my heart.
There are many things I can get her but here is my dilema. The daughter won a large settlement when she was young (doctor's error caused the CP). The house they live in is owned by the daughter. It's just her and her Mom. Her husband to be will move into her house and the Mom will continue to live there (she needs some supervision and the BF has issues as well). Thus, they really don't need the normal things young couples need when starting out.
Mom doesn't work and they both live off social security and a monthly check they receive from the settlement. Even though the money is the daughter's, Mom "thinks" it is her's. I know if there are any gift cards, Mom will use them on herself. I know it's not right or good but that is why I can't figure out what to buy.
I need something that Mom can't claim or worse yet return to the store and keep the cash. Also, does anyone know how I can write a check for the wedding that Mom can't get at too. I know--it's sad and horrible, but I think Mom will get to the card box first and remove cash without the daughter's knowledge. How can I ensure Mom can't cash the check? If I put in the daughter's name, Mom has POA at the bank.
I am hoping someone has some suggestions or ideas.
