DFTWs can have pretty long timelines. I was wondering how soon after you were engaged/started planning your wedding did you start shopping for your wedding dress?

I was engaged at the end of July 2010 and at the beginning of January I bought my dress. I wasn't actually planning on buying my dress (or finding it for that matter!) until one year out, but I ended up finding it early and didn't want to chance losing it! I thought the whole finding the perfect dress process was going to take a lot longer (I am a very picky person) so I started browsing stores sooner rather than later:goodvibes

We got engaged in August and I waited until January (close to our one year mark/our wedding is this December) to start looking at dresses. Looking back it seems like I waited a really long time but to be honest, time flew by. I looked and looked and looked at magazines and on-line prior to my first dress appointment. I feel as though it is a personal opinion as to when you start shopping. My wedding consultant at the bridal boutique said that I was fine on time. I am just like disneylizzylou and am very picky. Have fun shopping!!! :dance3:

we got engaged in April 2010....I bought my dress in Aug 2010....wedding is April 2011. I am usually very picky....but I bought then 4th dress I tried on...lol

We were engaged in September 2010 and I bought my dress in December!!! I went to the salon with two of my girlfriends "just to look" but fell in love with the sencond dress I tried on!

I am a goober and went just to try dresses on with no plans at all for the wedding and ended up finding .... the one :D hahahaha - so , now TWO YEARS LATER it will still have to wait until October for my DFTW :thumbsup2
:rotfl2:

But, I still love it so obviously I made the right decision. I also got it on a sample sale so I got it for half price - It was in June which I am not sure if that is a normal time for sample sales, but it was a great time obviously to get a designer gown on sale :cool1:

We got engaged in May 2010 and I bought my dress in July; our wedding is not until October 2011. I think once you have decided all the details that will affect your type of dress (venue, season, level of formality), you can buy your dress whenever you want. Although once you find it, I think it's important to stop looking! I don't really believe that any dress is "the one", you are bound to look fantastic in multiple dresses. You don't want to question your decision, so don't look at dress websites anymore.

I got engaged on a Sunday...called DFTW on Monday to pencil me in for the date, went shopping on Wed, Thurs, and Friday and bought the dress on Saturday (I had seen my dress about a year back and fell in love with it (although I made myself wait until I was engaged to try it on) and even though I shopped around, I ended up buying!

Then again, our engagement was/is only 5 and a half months :)

I got my dress exactly 6 months before the wedding.. My mother works at a bridal shop however so she could have got it rushed if need be:) (we ordered due to the sample not being big enough ;) )

agreed, I still see tons of dresses I love ... it all boils down to what is best for the day, venue, movement, budget, etc.... there are so many dresses out there -- there will always be another 'the one' :) In my opinion of course :goodvibes :hippie:

we got "engaged" in november 2009... but it wasn't official (down on one knee with the e-ring) until March 2010.

I started shopping for dresses this past january.
We had not decided on venue or theme, but I knew that my two most important 'shallow' things for my wedding were Dress and Photography. so we knew that our wedding theme and/or venue would change if needed to fit the dress (not the more traditional way around of finding a dress that fits the venue LOL).

We got engaged of July 2010 and I got my dress February 2011 (I started shopping in January). It was one if the first gowns I tried on, but I tried on a lot after i found it to make sure. Our wedding isn't until November 2012, so many people would say I bought it early. I had already been engaged for 7 months-so it didn't feel early to me! I'm also not fickle, so I know I won't change my mind about it in the next year and a half.

I was engaged in May 2010, bought my dress in July 2010, and will be getting married in September 2011. I was nervous about buying a dress and wasn't planning on doing it so early, but we wanted to go see what was out there and I fell in love with a dress that was on clearance and the last one in my size, so I had to buy it. But I think in general I would have preferred to wait a bit longer - I think the excitement of it wouldn't have been able to stop me, though! :goodvibes Because last time I went home and tried my dress on it was a bit snug - and I had gained about 8 pounds. I've now lost 7 of those pounds so hopefully next time I try it on it will be good. But you have to be super careful about your weight, because I never thought that 8 pounds would make such a huge difference!

This is one of my biggest fears.. that if I buy my dress too early I won't fit it any more by the wedding! Congratulations on losing 7 pounds though!
